COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
*Absolute Rat Bastard Ale - *Your* Absolution/ for drinking our /ale/ is granted!! This Rat, who is not to be confused with his cousin, Dirty Rat, is a very full-bodied pale ale. This unadulturated beer is of complex malt character with slight citrus hop flavor and bitterness to resolve any taste issues that usually come with bottled beer. 1.063 O.G.; SRM 19.3; IBU 32.9

On tap at the Govnors Brew Pub. Poured a dark and deep amberish almost brown color with a small sized off white head. Aromas of orange peels, roasty, and toasty. Tastes of citrus, floral hops, caramel, a little fruity, and biscuity.

On tap at the brewpub. The body was brown with some orange and the edges. The aroma was fairly sweet with some pears and cinnamon. The taste was lightly bitter with some black tea. There was also a muted sweetness like plums. Decent.

Pour is dark brownish amber with a thin tan head...smell is faintly sweet with caramel and hop that I can’t put my finger on...taste is lightly sweet at first with some bright caramel flavors...then a medium metallic type bitterness...

GTMW 2007. Brewer’s description in the festival program reads "Hybrid brown ale". Poured a clear reddish-orange color. Trim, off-white head. Aroma was of toasted bread and grassy hops. Nutty with a bit of biscuity malt and citrusy hops. Clean finish. To be honest, this one probably didn’t really get a fair shake as far as it’s rating goes. It’s tough to stand out when preceded by the likes of Surly barrel aged darkness and Minneapolis Town Hall Czar Jack.

This poured a deep mahogany body lightly highlighted in red and had a minimalist’s beige head. The aroma was rich and malty but held an odd sourness that when blended together reminded me of the candy corn that I ate as a kid but can no longer stomach. Exhaling through my nostrils as I drank, I found it somewhat tasty, some roasted malts, dark dried fruits, caramel, a hint of smoke. Not a bad drink if you can divorce the aroma from the experience.

When I called the brewer to determine this beer’s style, "Muffy" or "Cissy" (or someone) gave me the runaround of "Well... it’s a dark beer, a little bitter, but not TOO bitter..." When I stopped them and said, "No... I know it’s an ALE, but what TYPE of ale?", they paused and proceeded to start reading the commercial description above. I thanked them and am listing this as an "Old Ale"... as is the case with the other Govnor’s brews with "Absolute" in their name. If anyone cares to try to get a better answer, feel free. (And suggest better education for the brewpub staff while you’re at it.)

Poured a dark, coppered-mahogany with very little head save for a few soapy bubbles of halo. Vinegared aroma dissipates to find an odd underbelly of prune pastry filling and tart cherries. Flavor finds dark fruits and biscuity malts with a light smokiness and a covering of vinegar before an earthen linger. A bit on the thin side with an oiliness to the palate. It reminded me alot of Taylor Brewing’s <a href=http://www.ratebeer.com/Beer/taylor-dark-sati Satin... a "Dunkel" with strong vinegar notes that took a while for me to warm up to.
