COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Originating in England as a precursor to Stout, this style was said to have been favored by porters and other physical laborers. Today this dark and smooth style with a full body and complex malt balance is favored by beer drinkers everywhere. NOTE: Previous recipe was a porter at 5.4% ABV.

On tap at the Govnors Brew Pub. Poured a dark brown color with a small sized off white head. Aromas of roast, chocolate, and some coffee. Tastes of chocolate, roast, caramel, and some faint dark fruitiness in the background.

On tap at the brewpub. Nearly perfect black body with a tan head. The aroma is rich with some milk chocolate and roast. The tast has some prunes and baking chocolate. There was also some bread crust in the finish. Solid.

Pour is brownish black with some ruby highlights and no head...smell is roasty and sweet with cocoa, bread crust, and faint coffee...taste is sweet with chocolate and toffee...nice roasty character...

Served headless (and way too cold), it appeared as a very dark brown, almost black save for a giveaway through the wateriness that was detectable through the top edge of the beer. Aromas were weak, with some burnt coffee and baker’s chocolate striving to emerge. Coffee and smoke come out in the flavor from within an oily mouthfeel. Lightly effervescent. Finish is on the dry side with slight astringency. A little thin, but it holds it’s own. This has the makings of an "angry" beer (see review of <a href=http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/uinta-kings-peak King’s Peak Porter), which would be better appreciated if I had the time to let it warm.

Mostly opaque and lacquered in color. Moderate cola aroma with some creamy milk chocolate, toasted nuts and chocolatey confection powder accents. Fuller bodied that then stout but this one has a great deal more of an acidic bite. If this was from a bottle, I’d say it’s infected because of the vinegar and sickly syrupy qualities. As a tap from the source in the room down the hall, I can safely say that it’s merely a bad porter. Maybe it’s just bad karma for when an Irish brewpub tries to do an English style.
