(Bottled, 0.75l) Clear dark copper with a small, fading head. Nutty aroma of caramel and some alcohol, dried fruit. Flavor is caramely-nutty-malty with low bitterness and some dried fruitiness. Medium to full body, lowish carbonation. Nicely balanced and smooth brew, feels like an ale.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: JUL 12, 2010 Bottle, once at a tasting and once at Swift. Pours a cloudy, light brown with a substantial white head. Nose is all spice and sweet malt. Flavor is dynamic and mostly sweet. Lots of honey and chestnut, along with some less discernable spices. Nice and pretty unique.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
Bottle was a gusher and lost about 40%. Poured with large (!) tan head and good lace. Color is a hazy medium amber. Aroma is a slightly sour yeasty malty spicey and bitter belgian style. Flavor’s about the same. Decent body and carbonation (!) Slightly boozy at the end. Much better than the other Italian Chestnut beer I just had. But that’s not saying a lot.

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
This is the only Grado Plato since I first tried chocarrubica around Thanksgiving time. Poured, or rather exploded out of the bottle with a thick head that stayed only shortly, revealing a very nice dark amber colored brew. Subtle yet pleasent aroma, ever so slight alcohol smell because of the 8% abv. Nice heavy malt flavor, very nutty from the chestnuts but also has somewhat of a roasted/slightly burnt hazelnut taste as well. Very good, I’d definitely pick this up again.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours a dark chestnut brown color with some dark amber chocolate brown hues when held to a light source with a thick 2 finger frothy tan head with good retention that slowly settles into a lasting cap. Sporadic spots of soapy lacing.
Spicy peppery aroma with some estery Belgian yeast notes that give off a lot of dark fruit. Hints of raisin, grape, plum and fig with a bit of nutty malt and alcohol.
Very quaffable medium body with lots of spice, dark fruit notes and smooth malt character. Hints of dark cherry, grape, plum, raisin and fig along with some peppery spice, chocolate malt and hazelnut. The sweetness of the dark fruit and the smooth maltiness are very well balanced and the ABV is very well masked without a trace of alcohol heat. Very complex and quaffable.

4.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
I have tried Moretti and Peroni, but this is my first Italian craft brew. At US$ 16, it may be the most expensive half liter of beer I have ever purchased. It comes in a nice swingtop bottle with an attractive European label. Medium brown pour with a decent head. Good aroma of sweet malt with herbal notes and a dash of yeast. SSF is fairly peppy and flavorful. It has a prickly mouthfeel and an exciting aftertaste that is both clean and warm. Solid malt base and interesting hops, with chestnuts having a subtle impact and adding something unique to the flavor. This is overpriced, but it is a fine brew that is worth a try, and deserves a higher rating.

Bottle. Pours a mahogany body with an off white head. Grape, and licorice flavor with a note of plum and a chewy nutty character. A hint spicy with toffee and grape. Really nice!
