3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
500ml bottle (BeerAngel.de) 7.2%
Deep reddy brown, big frothy head. As it pours, there’s a rich malty and raisiny aroma. In the glass the malts take over and it’s big-time grains heading toward the husky side. Smooth slick palate. Roasted retronasals, even with burntness. Not surprising really, there’s definitely burntness in the taste. A few light fruity esters try to have a say, but they’re brief, drowned by the kick of drying noble hops and husky malts. Finish almost has a stale coffee-grounds feel to it. Feels potent, but not actually alcoholic. Not in the same class as the big gun doppelbocks, more just a strong dunkelbock. Nothing wrong in that. I must re-iterate - the roast here is great.
