COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Local legends aren’t just born, they’re brewed. And no beer in the Midwest has a grander brewing tradition than Grain Belt. For over 100 years, Grain Belt has been the beer that fathers have passed on to sons and friends have passed amongst each other at local bars and watering holes. It is a beer with tradition that spans generations. Which is why it has become legendary–both here and across the country.

In the 1940s, around the same time Grain Belt built its famous bottle cap sign overlooking the Mississippi River in Northeast Minneapolis, they introduced a “Beer of Exceptional Quality”–Premium. With its crisp, unique flavor, Premium quickly became the flagship of the Grain Belt brand. And still is to this day.

Although the Grain Belt Premium recipe has changed hands over the years, one thing has remained the same–its legendary unique taste. And now that Premium is in the capable hands of a brewery with an even longer tradition than Grain Belt–the August Schell Brewery–may you rest assured that the flavor and heritage of Premium will live on forever.

So as a local legendary beer, we raise a glass to all the people, places and things that make the Midwest such a rich and unique place to live. Here’s to you!

This beer is really pretty decent, but still nothing much to it. I like some more complexity.

Was in Minnesota, ran across a bottle. It wasn’t skunked but it also isn’t that great. No worse than BMC.

Yellow color with a white head, just like the clear bottle shows. Aroma is mild, lager malt and grain. Tastes a bit more lively than a lot of pale lagers; some bitter/sour notes, malt, and grass. A lawn mowing beer.

Pour form a 12 oz bottle. Crystal clear pal lager with fizzy head that quickly passes. Light aroma of grains. Taste is light malt / corn with a bit of astringent hops in the finish. It actually has a little bit of character, though the sour astringent hops and muted corny grain are not the finest. Is OK.

UPDATED: MAY 16, 2011 Poured a pale yellow with a light head that faded to lace quickly. Aroma was slightly sweet and was of malts and grains - slighltly fruity as well. Taste was unique - malt and corn with an interesting finish of light hoppiness. Tasted like High Life with an extra dash of corn just for good measure. That said, it was pleasantly different than other mass produced lagers in that corn flavor was not as bitter and unpleasant as many of them. Palate was acceptable but nothing special. Overall, not too bad for a cheaper pale lager.

On tap @ Sanctuary in Iowa City. Pale yellow appearance with a light whitish head. Light pale lager nose. Pretty sweet pale lager flavor. Fairly easy drinking.

UPDATED: AUG 15, 2011 Beery aroma and flavor with a hint of fruitiness. Not groundbreaking but very good for a pale lager.

The only reason I thought to add my rating for this beer is b/c when a friend asked if I wanted a glazed doughnut with my burger I inquisitively replied "sure". I was shortly presented with a pitcher of premium and sure enough... glazed doughnut, not the krispy kreme kind. The delicious bakery kind. When drinking on a budget and in Minnesota, I’ll have another premium.
