Local legends aren’t just born, they’re brewed. And no beer in the Midwest has a grander brewing tradition than Grain Belt. For over 100 years, Grain Belt has been the beer that fathers have passed on to sons and friends have passed amongst each other at local bars and watering holes. It is a beer with tradition that spans generations. Which is why it has become legendary–both here and across the country.

In the 1940s, around the same time Grain Belt built its famous bottle cap sign overlooking the Mississippi River in Northeast Minneapolis, they introduced a “Beer of Exceptional Quality”–Premium. With its crisp, unique flavor, Premium quickly became the flagship of the Grain Belt brand. And still is to this day.

Although the Grain Belt Premium recipe has changed hands over the years, one thing has remained the same–its legendary unique taste. And now that Premium is in the capable hands of a brewery with an even longer tradition than Grain Belt–the August Schell Brewery–may you rest assured that the flavor and heritage of Premium will live on forever.

So as a local legendary beer, we raise a glass to all the people, places and things that make the Midwest such a rich and unique place to live. Here’s to you!

Tap from my kegmeister. Straw color with a decent white head. Slight corn aroma, not too much else. Flavor is sweet with a nice fresh clean finish. This is my favorite yellow fizzy beer and I’ve rated it with the style in mind.

Tap, bottle, can. Typical thin lager, yellow pour, minimal head. Very little in terms of aroma and flavor, maybe a little more substance than other macros, but not much.

poured bottle into pint glass. aroma is sweet and grainy, definitely a fruity beer. the appearance is a light golden yellow, not very interesting to look at. it has a malty taste and very sweet, berries, more notably blueberries. light body, thin, and average carbonation. again, blueberries seem strong in the aftertaste. overall not an impressive brew however, from plenty of personal experience a great summer beer and in the mood for something sweet. good for splitting a case with a bud when youre on a budget.

UPDATED: OCT 29, 2009 Poured from bottle into water glass while at work. Very clear golden yellow but head does not last. Nice bubbles. Grainy aroma, sweet and some corn. Clean and crisp with corn flavored grains and very slight hops at end. Aftertaste is mostly corn. More moderate carbonation than some for the style, which are often way too fizzy. Easy to drink but I am not a fan of corn in my beer. Of course, I would happy to drink this in the right situations.

It’s your basic lager. Give it a shot if it’s available...it does have some contrast with your major US labels...but not terribly notable. But if you’re just looking for something simple, cool, cheap, and refreshing on a hot day, this may be the one to turn to. Pale yellow in color and not complex. Thin head with some faint fruit-sugars.

Yellow straw color, crisp clean and light flavor, good summer brew w/ a burger and the sun toasting your balding head. Beats the macro brews for flavor no problem, and price is even or better.

Bright pale yellow, with no head. Fruity aroma. Sweet tastes, mainly of strawberry, and sugar wheat. Rough mouthfeel and a little rough going down. Reminds me a cocktail of a pale lager and fruit beer.

UPDATED: OCT 20, 2011 Sampled on tap at the Freight House in Stillwater, MN. Poured a light golden straw hue with a very modest, white head and nearly no lacing probably due to the plastic cup. The nose was light grain, yeast and a bit of sweetness. The flavor was light malt and a touch of hop bitterness. Didn’t need to try the Premium Light,..this was light enough for me. Pleasant lawn mower/hydration brew.
