An old style porter. Smooth and creamy, spiked with port to give it the flavour of dark berries.

Cask at the Blacksmiths Arms, St Albans. Very dark brown with a thin creamy khaki head. Raspberry, chocolate and roast chestnut on the nose. A hint of chimney smoke as well. Sweet and fruity taste throughout. Long warming finish for this ABV. Silky smooth mouthfeel with a slight tingle providedby natural carbonation. Sweet/tart aftertaste. An excellent discovery.

Gravity cask at the Rake. Black, no head. Aroma is liquorice and molasses. Body is medium, smooth, very low carbonation. Taste is sweet, under-ripe banana, some berry fruit, astringent in the finish. Too sweet for me, but it’s fine.

Bottle. Black with tan froth on top. Roast malt nose with a caramel twang. Dark fruits, roasted coffee beans, firewood and mild, sweet lactose. Dry finish. Medium body with a thin texture and a bit of fizz - par for the course with a porter.

Phil (in a rush): Super-rich coffee-cake roast. Very smooth and mellow.
Anna: Tasty. Lovely aroma, some fruity esters in the mouth. Roasted finish builds nicely. More please!

Bottle from Nina’s Mini Mart, Edinburgh 291012
Black, huge frothy bubbly tan head
Aroma of yeast, roasted malts, hint of spicy hops, touch of earthy malts
Taste as main flavour, touch of chocolate, some fruity malts in there
Palate - Very fizzy, thinnish body. Smooth palate (once the carb had settled)
Overall - Reasonable porter but too much carbonation
