3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 sm89walt (1419) - Norwich, - DEC 2, 2011
Cask - The Plough, Norwich. Poured with a small but lasting creamy light tan head atop a deep, near opaque ruddy brown body. Soft & creamy roast & chocolate profile, some tangy fruits too. Medium body, soft on the palate, dryish with a soft & rounded bitterness. Somewhat lingering tang at the back & a hint of choccy, yeast in there.

Bottle at Scopey’s CBC Tune-Up. Deep brown color with no head. The nose is deep bitter chocolate and roasted malts. Light lactose and sweet brown sugar. The taste is watery dry roasted coffee, rainy field grass. The body’s quite light and bone dry on the finish. Overall, a decent porter. It just lacked any compelling flavor for me.

Bottle at my Pre-CBC Tune-Up Tasting. It pours very dark brown, with a thin beige head. The nose is roasted malt, smoke, bonfire, chocolate and a touch of dark fruit. The taste roasted malt, caramel, wood, charcoal, filter coffee, dark fruit and milk chocolate, with a dry-roasted finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. An all-round good porter.

Cask@The Plough, Norwich. Pitch black colour, small brown head. Aroma is roasted malts, chocolate, toffee and mild ashes in just about a perfect balance. Flavour is mild roasted notes, some coffee, caramel and mild wooden notes. Really pleasantly balanced. Bartender (the brewer, I think) said there is an 8 % version of this one in the plans...

Cask (gravity dispense) at Reading Beer Festival on 28 April 2011. Very dark - almost black - with a slightly oily appearance. Some chocolate and a little roastiness in the aroma. More of the same on the palate with some vaguely tart dark fruits. Dry and vaguely powdery / dusty on the palate. Can’t say I picked up any port. Overall, pretty decent and certainly enjoyable.

Bottled A black beer with a lovely frothy coffee head which sadly doesn’t last quite long enough to score a 5. Sour fruity aroma with some oily tyres. The taste is pretty bitter as well as fruity. Verging on harsh, but still skilfully produced.
