This is our tribute to the black iron that paved the way to get to the Grand Canyon. Black Iron is a high hopped, fragrant ale that is as deep and as wide as the Grand Canyon itself!

Strong, resiny hop aroma coming off a golden orange body with a white head. Strangely, the hops arenít nearly as strong in the flavor as they seem in the aroma. Thereís a good pine/citrus hop flavor, but itís not overwhelming or very sticky. In fact the more dominating flavor is a sweet passion fruit/guava flavor thatís a nice surprise. The finish leaves a subtle bitterness and more sweet tropical fruit. Pretty unusual for an IPA, but quite enjoyable.

On draft at Tavernaís. The pour was a full amber to orange color, nice head and ok lacing. The aroma was citrus, pines, and caramel. The flavor was primarily hops, citrus, some resinous pine, herbal notes. The malts were subdued, slight toffee it seemed. Mouthfeel was moderate in body, amply carabonated to be refreshing. A decent but not sensational IPA.

Can: In the new world of Black IPAs, talk about a deceiving title! The aroma is very light and has hints of citrus, fruit, grapefruit, and grass. It pours a mostly transparent amber with a decent amount of sediment and a smal off-white head that quickly fades to a thin ring around the edges of the glass. The flavor starts with a quick dose of fruit and caramel. The finish has some very mild citrus and grapefruit hops. Medium bodied with mild carbonation and somewhat flat mouthfeel which makes it feel a little thin. Overall, easy drinking and far from offensive, but really lacking in the hops department for an IPA.

(12oz can, courtesy of Cavie) Pours a clear golden body with a small white head. Aroma of caramel, grass, and light tropical fruits. Flavor of grass, caramel malt, pine, and florals with a dry, bitter finish.

Can courtesy hellbilly. Pours a clear light orange color with very little carbonation or head. Aroma is just a bit odd. Smells of easy hops that might be a bit old with a small sweet maltyness. Flavor is tangy and bitter dry, sweet candied hops and floral. Finishes with a bit of a tingle and dry.

(12oz can). Pours a hazy dark golden color with off-white head. Decent carbonation and some lacing. Aroma has hard candy, some dank hops, with some cardboard. Taste is very sweet that overpowers the hops. Old can? Medium bodied with a slick texture and smooth finish. Iím quite surprised at how faded the hops are. Not a bad beer at all, but not what I expected from an IPA. Will have to re-rate when Iím at the pub.

12oz can. Rating #23. Real dark gold pour with a dark thin white head. Soapy hop aroma and kind of fruity. Nice flavor, decent bitterness with a nice aftertaste. (1600)

Can pours clear copper with off white head. The aroma is soapy citrus rind as well as faint notes of malt sweetness, spicy hops and earthiness. The taste has an evil combination of grapefruit hops, pine hops, crystal malts, some roasty malts and faint metal shavings that really do not go too well together. When this was still too cold it was mostly metal shavings. Let it warm some. But warm it is still a mess with the metal hanging around in the background. It just has thick and bold flavors that are heading in different directions.

Pours a brownish yellow color with a super thick white head and tons of lacing. My beer was from a 12oz can and was very clear. Aromas are malt and caramel and hops but I canít tell what variety. The taste first hits me as metallic, followed by sweet malted barley and slight hop bitterness. The metallic tasted mostly faded as I drank the rest of the beer thankfully. Itís an OK IPA, a little too sweet for me and I didnít enjoy the metallic taste.
