Rastacouere (5258), Montréal, Quebec, Canada Aug 20, 2005 Light brown head initially climbs the glass and leaves traces. Clearish around the edges almost black hue. Huge vanilla essence and mokaccino nose, feeling both rather fresh and mostly artificial. Powdery milkshake, chocolaty, remarkable intensity which makes me almost suspicious. Spicy/sweet palate proposes the mildest roastiness to counterbalance the lactic, fake chocolate flake flavors. Light bodied, faint carbonation. Michigan brewer’s fest, Ypsilanti, Michigan, Juillet 2005. BBB63 (3767), La Porte, Indiana, USA Jul 24, 2005 MiBG Fest 2005:
Deep brown hue with a frothy tan head and some lace. The aroma has notes of coffee and sugar, vanilla and mocha, toasted bread, and a hint of lactic sourness. The taste is a smooth balance of sweet chocolate and caramel with mild bitters and coffee. That hint of lactic twang show as well but doesn’t interfere with the rest of the flavors. The feel can be heavier, but works well enough within the framework of ths beer and is silky. A surprisingly good beer, after all the big stouts and porter, this still shines through. badnewsbeers (982), Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA Jan 26, 2005 on tap at grand rapids brewing co...dark brown body with little off-white head...aroma is mostly chocolate and coffee, with a touch of vanilla notes; although it could have been amped up a bit, the flavor was great (vanilla, roasted notes, coffee, chocolate); quite a refreshing beer Silphium (2006), Lansing, Michigan, USA Jan 10, 2005 On tap at GRBC. Deep brown, pretty much opaque body with red highlights and a thin cream head. Aroma of coffee, dry roasted malt, and sharp graininess. Considering the rather bland aroma, I was nicely surprised by the tasty body, with roasted malt, coffee, and plenty of sweet coffee cream (lactose) with a slightly bitter dry roasted malt finish. The body was thin as is standard at GRBC, but the beer was tasty and conjured memories of Mackeson XXX Stout.
