Gentle roast aroma with caramel highlights, a hint of vegemite and herbs. Nice oily black looking. Light caramel (again scotch finger biscuit) flavour with coffee and dark roast malt finishes dry. Found it thinner than I expected but really easy to drink.

I really rate this stout. It's robust enough but without the high alcohol of Coopers or Cascade. I'll be trying it again next winter.

Pours very dark clear brown. Small brown-beige head. Sweet toffee aroma with coffee and roast grains present. Smooth soft medium-thin mouthfeel. Sweet start with a dry bitter roast coffee finish and aftertaste. Not bad stuff.

Pours like an opaque dark brown sump oil and almost as headless. Big golden syrup sweet and roasted malt aroma. Medium thin body, very low carb, medium smoothness mouth feel. Medium to light sweetness and bitter roasted malt and coffee flavours. Softish sweet finish tending to light bitter sweet aftertaste. Didn't get all the yeastiness that others reported in either the aroma or flavour. A bit thin in texture but overall quite pleasant

Very little head but that didn't matter cos the taste is what I like, smoooooooth. Vegemite yeasty nose, dry coffee flavours, good colour and nice bitter finish. Cheers!

UPDATED: AUG 14, 2005 Black (obviously) with not much head retention and bubbles forming on the side of the glass like a soft drink. Aroma quite grainy and roasty. Roasty, coffee flavours and fairly bitter but lacking malt presence. Very thin body and quite fizzy (not good in a stout.) I have never really liked this beer but there’s a lot worse.
RR: Pretty nice on a cold night. Great head retention, and certainly very well-balanced with all the requisite stouty characters. I’d like more of everything but I guess that’s not really the point of the style. Would probably rate it 3.2 or something but I’ll leave the score for the moment.

A very porterish nose and good colour in the pour. The taste is good too but it is a bit thin. It is a good effort but not exceptional.

i was wondering what they meant in the label blurb when they said it was an "Australian style stout" but I got the idea immediately on the first whiff, with an aroma that smells uncannily like vegemite. Flavourwise it's like a cleaner version of Sheaf stout - fairly sweet coffeeish taste initially, then pungent tarry burnt flavours, then sweet lagery hops, then more burnt bitterness. Some hints of gingerbread in there too. Texture's very smooth: light but nicely oily. Maybe a bit too smooth for my liking - I would've liked more rasping roast barley graininess like Surefoot. Overall it's a good un. 7 3 7 3 14

perfectly decent. subdued roast malt aroma. pretty dark. some ginger tang and then surprisingly dry. no real burnt flavours. soft texture, pretty skullable

UPDATED: JUL 18, 2003 For grand ridge, I've kinda come to expect more. This is a reasonable stout, but not the superior quality of most of what this brewery produces. A little insipid. Nice coffee flavours though. RERATE 180703. The previous was written before I had really developed much of a taste for stout. This is actually a fine aussie stout. One of the best, really, in a country not known for producing stout. I don't know if I consider it world class, but it has a lot going for it, if still a bit thin.
