One of the best of the Australian stouts. As a style, Aussie stouts tend to be leaner-bodied than their international counterparts, which suits the local climate. This is very easy to drink, even in hot weather, and it goes beautifully with oysters. It poured an ebony colour with a thick tan head. All the usual stout characters are there in the nose: licorice, chocolate, coffee grounds. The medium body can come across as a little thin for the style. It has a sweetish middle with chocolate and dark fruit notes and a nice dry espresso finish. Very satisfying drinking. (Bottle)

On tap at the brewery. Served a black color with a bit of red around the edges. Good tan head that faces to nice lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, dark chocolate and some dark fruit. Taste of roasted malt, some coffee and dark chocolate with a bit of nuts in the background. Medium body, smooth and nicely balanced. Just a bit on the sweet side. Nice beer for the style, nothing fancy.

The beer pours a solid black with a tight tan head. The nose shows some grain and caramel but not too intense. The taste however is a rich combination of chocolate and coffee that finishes with a dry finish. It’s quite well rounded, with little of that really intense bitterness that makes some stouts a bit of a challenge. All round, a very approachable and balanced beer.

Bottle courtesy of my brother. Poured a dark brown with only a wisp of a light brown head. Aroma of roasted malt, caramel, brown sugar and coffee. Really surprised with the quality of the flavor. Definitely above average for the style. Roasted malt, coffee and caramel predominate. Tones of brown sugar, earth and nuts. A touch of toffee like sweetness.

From a 330ml bottle on 18/7/2012. Pours a very dark brown with a medium head. Has a slight chocolate malt aroma. Flavour wise, it’s got a good dose of chocolate and caramel malt, with sweetness well balanced against the roasty bitterness. Just a really solid, enjoyable stout. Comes across bigger than 4.9%.

UPDATED: JUL 18, 2003 For grand ridge, I've kinda come to expect more. This is a reasonable stout, but not the superior quality of most of what this brewery produces. A little insipid. Nice coffee flavours though. RERATE 180703. The previous was written before I had really developed much of a taste for stout. This is actually a fine aussie stout. One of the best, really, in a country not known for producing stout. I don't know if I consider it world class, but it has a lot going for it, if still a bit thin.

Bottled @ the Aussie Hotel, Sydney. Dark brown approaching black. Rich chocolate mocha aroma lifting nicely from the glass. Generous I thought with true complexity and interest. One of the best on show down under.

Off tap at deja vu, pours black with red amber highlights. Quickly fading white head. Burnt toast and coffee on the nose. Coffee and toast prevailing flavours, but not overwhelming, over notes of soy sauce and malt sweetness. An easy dryness all the way through, very long nice finish of bitterness. Standard stout mouth feel.
