Gravity at Volo in the middle of February 2008. Very murky brownish-auburn body with a small creamy eggshell head. Aroma has some mustiness to it along with some sweet caramel, doughy malts, and plenty of juicy cherry. Body is smooth and rich. Flavours include some juicy fruits, almost raspberry-like but reaching a sort of medicinal plateau. The bitter pineyness underpinnings provide some counterbalance which was a welcoming surprise. Quite sour in the middle and somewhat funky and then piney in the finish. It’s interesting for sure!

(500ml bottled Sept 24, 2010 thanks to ericandersnavy) clear ruby-brown with a few tan bubbles. Nose of oak, cherry, vanilla, sugar, currant and corn. Taste of umami, maple, oak tannins, chocolate, toasty, raisins, and a decent linger.

Thanks to ericandersnavy for sharing this bottle. The beer pours a dark amber color with a tan head. The aroma is a mix of lightly tart apples. toffee and some dark fruit. The flavor is more of the same. I get some toffee and lightly tart fruit, some grapes and grassy hops. A little more bitterness than I expected in a sour beer. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Bottle thanks to ericandersnavy. Pours with a small head that fades over a copper body. Aromas are of raisins, vinous, grapes, caramel, fruit and leather. Flavors are a bit bland. Light acidity, lasting bitterness, raisins and a vinous note. Light bubbles.

UPDATED: JUN 21, 2010 ** much later tap re-rate ** I caught the leavings of an expiring keg at Bar Volo and this beer was wonderfully balanced, without the dry stemmy-woody thing throwing the whole deal out of balance. Delicious and wine-like with array of fruit flavors, excellent. ** NEX DAY RE-RATE **A real ’Character Beer’ - took a few tries but slowly this is growing on me. Has an almost medicinal sharp herbal woody dry/sour taste over the fruit of sour cherry, unripe grape and green apple peel. interesting. The quality is there... unusual style I guess. 7 / 4 / 7 / 3 / 12 = 3.3 ** OLD RATING 500 ML bottle in trade from matt7215, thanks matt. Dense linen cap over foggy red brown coat. Aroma is promising with beguiling sourness and acidity, seems very decent. Taste is where things go afoul. Big impression of harsh lactic and hop notes, under which is struggling a bit of sour pale cherry, green apple peel and dark dried grapes. A little twiggy spice and then more hostile bitterness. Some polystyrene flavors over the long hoppy bitter and sour finish. Drying palate. A strange one! 7/4/5/2/11 = 2.9

A good, local sour ale. What a rarity! The head is enormous and frothy. The aroma and taste are very sour, citrus, and a little smokey. The mouth feel is very thick and heavy. A sipping beer.

Bottle. Reddish copper with fair head. Aroma of sour mash with a touch of vegetable. Flavour is harsh wood chips soaked in lighter fluid. Dirty taste and feel. No subtlety. Big bitter finish.

Bottle, dated 4/18/2008. Poured medium garnet with a huge cap of beige head. The aroma picked up toasty pale and floral notes with tart, redder fruits around.. airy earth and faint lemony-wheat as well.. aiight. The flavor was not aiight.. a touch of honey and bready malts surrounded by fruity sweetness and lightly sour skins.. grainy, residual sugars and vegetal character as well.. lots of random bitterness at the end.. harsh. Medium-bodied with above average carbonation on the palate.. lightly tart and very bitter.. I’m not sure what they were shooting for here, but I’ll avoid it if I see it again.

Bottled on 4/18/2008? The beer pours to a deeply hazy ruby body with a cream of wheat looking head. The aroma is sweet and sour rhubarb with some light funk. The flavor is a vile bitter orange/grapefruit peel. This was awful. Very bitter and not good. We drain poured most of the bottle.
