a robust, deeply flavoured ale with multiple malts and hops blended with some of the American ’super-alpha’ hops blended with some new and traditional aroma hops

Bottled on 4/14/09. Poured clear, medium garnet with a short, creamy cap of yellowy-beige head. The aroma picked up toasted caramel and nutty notes with an ample dose of juicy grapefruit, pine, and earthy hoppage.. sappy sweetness emerged as it warmed up. The flavor had caramel, darker fruit, and berry sweetness at the core, but the hops were a bit of a mess.. sticky grapefruit, pine, and peppery notes didn’t play well with each other or the malts.. finished bitter and sharp. Light-medium bodied, with an empty feel at times on the palate.. again it didn’t flow too well and ended very bitter. Lost some ground after the initial impression.

Bottle traded by TheJester. Thanks a bunch. Had this one on my short list for ages! It pours bit hazy amber with a medium off white head. The aroma is quite malty and fruity with lovely hoppy and earthy notes. Sweet hoppy flavour with notes of berries and toasted malt. Some fruity hops as well. Nice balanced and a WORLD CLASS name :)

Appearance :Amber gold with golden fine top.
Nose :Sweet .candy like malt aroma, herbal aroma behind.
Flavour/Palate: Medium bodied, aromatic soft but thinish. Caramel with herbal strike with hint of green bitterness. Fruity finish. Not especially coherent.

Growler at 2007 Golden Tap Awards, beerbistro. Pours a clear amber-copper with a good size mostly-lasting off-white head. Mild aroma of caramel malt, grain, light roastness and some light yeasty sweetness. Flavour has a good amount of resiny hops, some lightly roasted malt and a nice bitter finish. Average to medium bodied. Good stuff, very well done.

Draught. At Volo. Clear amber with an average off-white head. Leathery aroma - reminded me of a decent Merlot - burnt malt and UK hops, bitter and dry. Very bitter and burnt UK hop aroma, lots of toaty malt backing, long herbal-bitter finish. Average body, very astringent and carbonized moutfeel, bitter aftertaste - solid effort, I’d have it again .... I love the leathery character to this.

Bottle courtesy of Matt7215. Pours copper with a thin white head. Smells of citrus, roses, caramel, dough. Tastes of tea, some bitterness, light spice, dry malt.

pours cloudy amber-red with a decent beige head, little retention. caramel and lightly toasted malts - some complexity and sweetness, grassy herbal hopping. dusty and earthy yeastiness, light pine and resin, short but fairly present citrusy finish. average carbonation, medium body. nice but too much caramel for me.

In short: An earthy and hoppy amber ale. Good stuff.
How: Bottle 500ml from matt7215, thanks a lot Matt. Consumed very fresh, bottling date October 03 2008, drank 12 days later (October 15 2008).
The look: Clear amber body topped by a medium beige head with medium retention
In long: Intriguing nose, very hoppy for a so-called amber ale with lots of perfumy flowers citrus. Taste has a good amount of earthy caramelized despite a rather light body. Fresh red fruits and even a hint of pineapple. The perfumy note of the aroma translate into earthy leafy hops in the taste with a slight dark tea and green tea flavour. Hopping is actually reminiscent of a ESB but with a dirtier caramelized body. Nice beer. But calling a beer Plowman’s Ale up here in the snowy north is not really appealing, it’s like calling a beer the Dentist’s Ale in England.

Smell of hops. Strong hops and sharp bitter barley taste. Pours amber with a decently lasting head and little tracing. I’d like to try this again a little fresher - it would probably be a stronger brew. There’s a hint of caramel in there and a little woodiness, too. Bottle.
