Our intent for the annual Holiday Ale series is to release each year in November and December a special beer for enjoyment with special friends on a special occasion. This year’s version is an American-Style Barley Wine brewed with Southern Idaho 2-row pale malted barley combined with German and Belgian specialty malts to produce a mahogany to dark ruby red color, generous malt body and pleasing sweetness. The malt is balanced by about five pounds of bold American hops per barrel. Chinook and Galena, hops developed and grown in Idaho, along with Idaho-grown Bravos and Washington Simcoes give this strong ale a decidedly American flavor. Piney floral hops are evident when this beer is enjoyed fresh. Cellaring will enable those flavors to mellow, allowing the malt to shine with additional notes of raisin and fig. Barley Wine and Cave-Aged Gouda are a classic beer-cheese pairing. If a sweet dessert is what you crave, try pairing with a warmed pecan pie served al a mode.

750 ml bottle purchased at the brewery. Pours a mostly clear deep coppery red with a moderate tan head that lasted through the first quarter of the glass and left partial lace. Pleasant aroma of caramel and figs. The flavor is deeper than the aroma with ample caramel, figs and resinous pine. Mild bitterness at the finish. Medium-full bodied. Well-rounded mouthfeel. Goes down dangerously easy @ 10% abv.

750ml bottle. 4.99 at walgreens. Sturdy barley wine. Not sure how it was aged. Lots of dark fruit and caramel with still a bit of hops lingering through At this price makes other similar beers look like jokes.

Pours amber - light brown . Aroma is piney and citrus hops, dark sugar aromas, and malty cereal. Taste is surprising for a "barleywine" lighter in body and quite drinkable. Toffee flavors The hops really balance this one out too. Nicely done beer

750 ml. bottle. Pours a medium, well retained, ivory head, with some lacing, over a clear, copper amber (SRM 15) body.....nose is heavy resin, citrus peel, treacle.....taste is treacle, raisin, plum, fig, hints of date, leading to resin, grapefruit peel, ending with a lingering moderate bitterness....mouth feel medium, slightly sticky, alcohol warmth present, carbonation makes a creamy mouthful. This is obviously a young American Barley Wine, where some of the aggressive hops are still a bit green tasting, not unpleasant, just haven’t reached full maturity. The balance, twixt malt and hop, is very nice, and as this ages it will evolve greatly. The fifth ingredient in Barley Wines is time. I need to cellar some. BJCP 8/3/14/4/7

2012 bottle to snifter. Pours calm and clear amber with a little tight off white head that dissipates to a wispy film and collar. Aroma has warming alcohol and hops that are piney spruce and earthy with a malt background. Taste is bitter piney hops somewhat resinous and warming alcohol along with malt and caramel and spice. Palate is medium slick and drying with a warming spicy finish. I dig this and see this getting better with an aged bottle!

Bottle. Pours a cloudy reddish copper with thin, bubbly beige head and soapy lace. Notes of raisin, fig, caramel, toffee, tropical fruit, nuts. Full body, a little hot, could sit for a couple years. Slightly astringent.

On tap and snifter served at Lunar Brewing Co., displaying a clear, ruby highlighted, mahogany hue, a modest layer off white/cream colored head foam that diminished rather quickly to a thin ring & film, and left etched-like rings & spots of lacing on the glass. The aroma was initially on the mild side, but some mellow esters, light spice, resin, and light caramelly sweetness gradually showed through as it warmed. With a medium to full body, some wine-like hints, a light syrupy nature to the mouthfeel, and soft carbonation, alcohol warmth was strong, but not overpowering. More of a British styled Barleywine, which I currently find more appealing.
