COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Persephone (pur-seff-uh-knee) Imperial Pilsner was brewed with one foot in the past and one in the present. Grand Teton Brewing Company started by creating this beer in the German style, an offshoot of the original pilsner that features German noble hops and a lighter, crisper body than its Czech counterpart. They used a blend of domestic Idaho 2-row barley and imported German malts as well as German Hersbrucker hops for flavor and aroma. Grand Teton Brewing Company then took a leap forward by making this brew twice the strength of a traditional pilsner, with a big hop flavor to match.

Grand Teton makes some really great beer, so when I see this being carried at BevMo I don’t hesitate to get it. It’s not a disappointment at all. Aroma had lots of straw, fruity notes. After awhile, some bell pepper like notes and catty hops creep up. Flavor has notes of apple juice, cloves, alcohol, catty hops, all wrapped up in notes of french bread. Finish is on the hot side. Probably one of the better imperial pilsners I’ve had.

I am not sure how this hid so long in the back of the cellar. By now it is less imperial pilsener and more biere de garde. If by some reason you have one laying around don’t wait any longer although most of the damage has already been done.

Aroma / Appearance - A caramel cloudy base swirls around the glass with creamy vanilla head for company. Melted Twix filling, walnut shells, and thick marmalade spread over warm toast enrich the air. Butterscotch hard candy indicates that its time has gone.

Flavor / Palate - The chewy mouthfeel contains rich cider, a brief yeasty bite, and then smooth caramel. By now it tastes more like a fall harvest than a bright open summer day. Much like the warmth of June this has faded to a shadow of itself.

2011. bottle. hazy gold under a big, whipped, white head. a little peppery spice in aroma but mostly just old grassy hops. lightly buttery malt flavor with peppery, grassy hops and pineapple juice. dry finish, but with that buttery sweetness. safe to say this one is past its prime and i’m unsure why a 2011 pilsner would just show up on the shelf now, a bit peculiar if you ask me. ’slowrunner’ is right...this crap shouldn’t happen anymore. on the upside, it did turn into a pretty solid bier de garde!

"strike this one up to me not paying attention, and Total Wine Reno just plain sucking. January 2011, really??!! This imperial pils was one day short of being a year and a half old! the aroma was more sweet malt than hops, and the flavor and feel was lacking the crisp hop bite I was hoping for, though there was some lingering bitterness. Time has not done any favors for the flavor, though I cant asy what it was like fresh. Tart and sweet, with little balance. Not very pleasant. Quit selling old sh--! I’ll try and remember to find a date next time."

750ml bottle that a friend brought over to my house, thanks man! Yellow color, fizzy, looks like a pilsener to me. Smells like a bit of minerals but the aroma is not very strong. The taste was nice but seemed more like a strong lager than a pilsener though it did make me think of Mikkeller Draft Bear, though much less hoppy. Pours hazy yellow with white fizz. The aroma is light lemony hopped with solid grainy pale barley. The taste is great, solid grainy lager with a very dry lemony herbal finish. Simple for the most part but really good. More drying but true to the earthy German hops and strong style. There is a nice baked bready German nature that is familiar and very tasty. To notch for the style.

I love the look of a nice cloudy beer, the aroma is hints of apples and pears. the palate is nice and meaty, I getting a raw alcohol flavor through the beer. the hops are dominate but not over powering. its a unique take.

The aroma is slightly hoppy with citrus hops, cardboard, and grainy malt. The appearance is cloudy and golden with a nice head. The taste is like the aroma with an astringent finish. The palate is smooth. Overall this is not good.

Growler from Greenville Beer Exchange for my weekly "growler Saturday #6" A: Pours a damn bright orange color with a small white cap. Retention is pretty good. Really looks like Orangina or watery orange juice. S: Flowery, citrusy, and spicy hop varieties. Lots of lemon and lager yeast aromas. Very nicely balanced with pale malts, and quite hoppy T: Similar to the nose...lots of citrusy/spicy hops, lemon, alcohol as it opens up with time, a light breadiness, and perfume MF: Medium body, smooth carbonation, well done O: I really enjoyed this one, very easy drinker despite the higher than normal ABV. Pairs very well with spicy food, in this case Jamaican jerk bbq pork sandwiches Notes: Really enjoyable beer, lots of hops, lots of lemon in the flavor. Almost, but a shade less enjoyable than My Antonia in my opinion
