COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Trout Hop is brewed with Idaho 2-Row Brewers’ Malt and German specialty malts and has a deep, rich color and roasted finish without the thick and malty body that often accompanies dark beers. It is kettle hopped and dry hopped with Pacific Northwest hops, resulting in bold and intense bitterness and piney, zesty aroma. The full body and dry finish create a refreshing autumn ale, perfect for any crisp afternoon or cool evening. The spicy hopsof this ale complement rich, flavorful foods. Chocolate mole enchiladas, Indian and Thai curries, and barbeque ribs will accompany nicely.

From 22oz bottle to shaker. Pour is an oily jet black, creamy khaki colored head. Nose is hoppy, slight citrus, but mainly dominated by malt, coffee, caramel. Taste is bitter, medium body which was suprising. Finishes great, right amount of carbonation. Really liked this one, could have been a little bolder however.

Bottle from South Bay Drugs: Created a monstrous sizing of thick head which looked like a patch of shaving cream. As for the liquid, it was a dark almost black color of brown and assured me that this was more of a black ale than an IPA. Wrong, the aroma is clearly dominated by a scent of sticky wet green hops with only the slightest touch of darkened malt in the distant background. The flavor is somewhat subtle yet has a conflicting taste between the hops and roast malt that I’m not exactly sure how to react to. Overall an interesting beer that’s different from the rest of the other black IPA’s, but at the same time it’s lacking a balance.

750ml bottle $10, split three ways. Dark black color with a decently hoppy smell even though this was dated November 2010. The flavor was a hoppy citrus flavor but I felt like it really clashed with the dark malts. I’m pretty sure that I don’t really like this style just because of the way the hops seem to clash with the malts. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 03-12-2011 01:40:02

Bottle, 2011 vintage. Pours opaque deep brown to black with a huge tan creamy head that leaves clumpy lacing. Aroma is caramel, roasted malt, pine, citrus. Flavor same, light sweetness, touch of coffee, medium bitter finish, with bitterness from both the piney hops and the coffee. Medium body.

750ml bottle from Cardinal Wine in Niles. Now I notice the 2010 date. Just interested in what a Grand Teton Black IPA would be when I picked it up. Pours a very, very dark brown with a tannish head leaving terrific lacing. Aroma has dark roasted malts, chocolate and grapefruit. Taste is of patent malts, caramel, some chocolate and tangerine. Somewhat thick - which may be aging or not, cannot tell. Finishes with bitter malts and some length. Curious how it would have been 2 years ago; nice now and the hops presence may really have been better.

Bottle shared by Thorpe429. Thanks Mike! A: The beer appears dark brown color with a half inch of head that leaves some decent lacing. S: The aroma has a nice citrus and hop scent, along with an odd, medicinal smell. T: The beer tastes alright, with the hop character more mild than I would prefer, especially given the 8.5% alcohol. I was hoping / expecting the beer to be more grandiose and bold, with a balance of roasted malt character and citrus hops. The taste has an odd astringency that detracts from the overall flavor presentation. M: The feel is decent, with a bitter dryness in the finish. D: An alright beer, but not one that I am interested in having again. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 12-06-2010

750ml bottle. Dark reddish brown with a long lasting, light tan head with some lacing. Aroma of cocoa, citrus, pine and coffee. Flavor of dry, bitter cocoa, citrus hops and no alcohol taste. Medium body with average carbonation and a dry, bitter finish. Really nice Black IPA, bottle was around 1 year old but still holding up nicely.

750 ml bottle Vintage 2010. Stamp says, bottled 30 Jun 2010. Picked up @ Julio’s Liquor’s about 8 months ago. Murky brown color with red showing around the edges. Aromas of pine needles, large amounts of citrus and roasted malt. Sweet roasted malt mixed with a nice balance of hops. No doubt at this points the hops are muddled due to the age. However, Not a problem for me. Newer bottle would have more pungent/ bolder hop profile. Even with a lower hop punch, it still lingers after the sip. Medium body with average carbonation. Overall, I should have drunk this right after purchase. That being said, It is still respectable and enjoyable.
