Trout Hop is brewed with Idaho 2-Row Brewers’ Malt and German specialty malts and has a deep, rich color and roasted finish without the thick and malty body that often accompanies dark beers. It is kettle hopped and dry hopped with Pacific Northwest hops, resulting in bold and intense bitterness and piney, zesty aroma. The full body and dry finish create a refreshing autumn ale, perfect for any crisp afternoon or cool evening. The spicy hopsof this ale complement rich, flavorful foods. Chocolate mole enchiladas, Indian and Thai curries, and barbeque ribs will accompany nicely.

Had a taste on tap at Craftsmen Tap House in Charleston. Totally reminiscent of a west coast IPA that happens to have dark malts for good measure. Color is dark but body is light. Decent head. Nose and taste is piney and citrus. Had a decent bitterness but balanced by dark, sweet malts. But sort of a mind trick with a lighter mouthfeel. Really interesting.

Bottle. Black with tan head. Aroma is roasty, burnt coffee, hops. Taste is bitter, roasty, a little sweetness.

Pours black with a thin, though lingering, tan head. The aroma has roasted malts, coffee, pine, grapefruit, and hints of caramel. It is balanced well. The initial taste leans towards the pine and grapefruit tastes. This extends into the maltiness. It gets very roasty, with plenty of coffee and some chocolate. Long aftertaste is roasted malts and sticks with you. Through all of this, it sitll retains some good IPA bitterness. Its medium in body, with a thicker texture, while having some lively carbonation. There might be better choices of this style, but I enjoyed this.

Bottle. Nice very dark pour with a frothy brown head. Aroma is citrus hop and some perfumy notes. Taste is roasted malt and hop bitterness on taste, but balanced. Really nice!

Bottled 11/5/10. Perfumed, malty aroma and black walnut color are hints of the rich complex flavors in Trout hop. Malt is dark but not overly toasted. Hops make an appearance, but after three years of bottle conditioning, the most significant contribution is bitterness sufficient to balance malt sweetness somewhat. Malt character is prominent. Though ABV is 8.5% there is also quite a bit of estery expression.

From 22oz bottle to shaker. Pour is an oily jet black, creamy khaki colored head. Nose is hoppy, slight citrus, but mainly dominated by malt, coffee, caramel. Taste is bitter, medium body which was suprising. Finishes great, right amount of carbonation. Really liked this one, could have been a little bolder however.

Bottle from South Bay Drugs: Created a monstrous sizing of thick head which looked like a patch of shaving cream. As for the liquid, it was a dark almost black color of brown and assured me that this was more of a black ale than an IPA. Wrong, the aroma is clearly dominated by a scent of sticky wet green hops with only the slightest touch of darkened malt in the distant background. The flavor is somewhat subtle yet has a conflicting taste between the hops and roast malt that I’m not exactly sure how to react to. Overall an interesting beer that’s different from the rest of the other black IPA’s, but at the same time it’s lacking a balance.

750ml bottle $10, split three ways. Dark black color with a decently hoppy smell even though this was dated November 2010. The flavor was a hoppy citrus flavor but I felt like it really clashed with the dark malts. Bottle, 2011 vintage. Pours opaque deep brown to black with a huge tan creamy head that leaves clumpy lacing. Aroma is caramel, roasted malt, pine, citrus. Flavor same, light sweetness, touch of coffee, medium bitter finish, with bitterness from both the piney hops and the coffee. Medium body.
