3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Tasted 3/19/11. 750ml bottle with a cap. Bottled Nov 04 2010. Pours dark and rather opaque with a brownish black hue. Bubbled khaki head. Aromas of soapy citrus and grapefruit hops. All hops in the nose, but it also has a subtle malty sweetness. Medium to full bodied with a ton more base malts in the palate than in the olfactory. Good coffee acidity and a nice toasty fudge note. The malt bill is full rich and quite nice while the bitter hops really add a dimension and depth of complexity to both the body and flavor palate. Good roasted flavors followed by the hop punch. Nice take on a relatively new style.

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Nearly black pour with a big frothy tan head that laces thickly. Aroma of mostly roasted malt and some pine. Big, rich flavor of roast, chocolate and pine. Medium-full bodied and really smooth. Excellent.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Served in a Stillwater wine glass.
Pours black with a single-finger light tan head and some good spotty lacing. The nose brings some piney and resinous hops, but also smells a bit like amoxicillin and antibiotics. There is a bit of an earthy component there as well. The taste is slightly-resinous and medicinal. It finishes a bit dry with some faint roast. Overall, I’m not a big fan of this as it reminds me of hoppy antibiotics.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
750ml bottle, dated 11/16/2010. Pours a dark brown with a big fluffy / creamy light tan head that retains well and laces the glass.
The aroma is a nice combination of sweet roasted chocolate malts and piney, slightly citric, hops. This is what a black IPA should smell like.
The flavor is sweet chocolate malts and fruit with some roast (light coffee) and piney fruity hops in the finish that add a medium bitterness that lingers in the aftertaste. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with low carbonation and is a little watery.
Overall, this is probably the best Black IPA I’ve had to date. I haven’t been a big fan of them so far, but this is well balanced with a nice combination of sweet chocolate, roast, citric fruits and piney hops.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
750mL pours clear dark mahogany with infra red hues and nice looking near creamy light mocha head. The modest aroma emits some dark fruity esters, smooth blunted pine like hoppiness, a bit of dark roasted malts and a sense of spicy black licorice. Not sure how this “Cellar Reserve” is going to actually cellar. I guess the bottle I have here has several months of age on it. As a consequence I’m tasting a pleasing mix of sweet dark fruity esters, a touch of chocolate, earthiness and a pretty firm non bitter pine hop flavor note. To midway though the hop bitterness does come forward with pine hop resin mixing with a slight malt roastiness.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Black coloured body with a thin off-white head and a few bubbles rising up from the bottom. Aroma of fresh hops, very roasted malt and some good caramel and fresh fig notes. Medium-bodied; Pungent roasty chocolate flavour at first with some light coffee and a very strong dose of nice and pungent piney hops. Aftertaste shows a good mix of the flavours with the hoppy flavour really coming through near the end. Overall, a very nice beer and well worth sampling if you can find it! I sampled this pint on draught at Pete’s Brass Rail in Danville, California on 19-March-2011.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
750mL bottle, bottled on 11/16/10. Poured deep brown with a lovely, creamy, well-retained khaki head. The aroma picked up roasty black malts balanced against pine and earthy hoppage.. not bad, but I didn’t really get the appeal. The flavor found fairly sour roasty black malts and a lot of pine bitterness throughout.. baker’s chocolate and other black malts at the core.. more sourness, roast, and bitterness on the finish. Medium-bodied and unnecessarily sharp on the palate.. I don’t know if the sourness was intentional, but I didn’t dig it.

3 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle hate to say the hops are shot on the 2010 bottle. Pours a black body with a coffee tan head a whiff medicinal but for sure a light soap y and moth like character. Protein, light roasted malt tones, some pine, soap and a mild bitterness. Oily with a mild warming. Was too old to enjoy for any real length of the 750.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
August 2010 bottle that has help up stunningly well... Looks like a slighter darker coca cola, clear and watery. A light tan head, ok retention and lacing... Nose of light soap, pine, spicy, muted but I like it... The taste is spice pine with a touch of molasses. Easy to drink. Recommend.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
The color and aroma and taste are all completely different. Pours a dark cola brown, aroma wise is the piney smell that I have come to love then the taste is pure grapefruit. Not much bitterness at all. Really a citrus bomb.
