On tap at Paragon. Pours black with beige foam and curtains of lace. Taste is roasty, dry, leafy hop bitterness in the finish, a tad tart. Aroma is tobacco ash, minerals. Not bad.

I liked this. It almost tasted more like a stout than an ipax, which was interesting. Bitter but very malty and roasty. I don’t sense the citrus too much until the end but still enjoyed it

Draft @ Growler Guys. Dark brown pour with an ample tan head. Nose is a little floral, piney hops. Light roast. Flavor is roasty with moderate piney bitters. Some hints of chocolate and the bittersweetness that comes with it. Heavier roast in the taste. Good.

1" dark tan head... the brew isn’t exactly black, instead a dark dark walnut with beautiful deep ruby highlites when held to a bulb. Good retention and lacing.
Nose shows a big blast of citrus hops and lesser dark malts.. the dark profile doesn’t really jive as much as some of the Black IPA’s I’ve had... the citrus elements seem too high to live harmoniously with the malty profile.
Big and bitter up front... oily pithy citrus hops ... dark malts are pretty heavy too, but verge too much on char territory for my liking.
Everything gets alot better with warmth, alot of warmth.. Near perfect body and carbonation given the ABV...
Pretty nice brew, but seriously, let this one warm up and enjoy it slowly for maximum presence.

12 oz. bottle just purchased but with a bottled on date of 12-2014.
A: Pours black with a tan head. The head is thick, creamy , moderately durable, and leaves excellent lacing.
Aroma: has dark roasted grains with near equal hops (diminished by age?). Even with the relatively weak somewhat subdued hops (for style) there’s a nice interplay between the two contrasting aromas.
The flavor is reversed, with more hop intensity than malts. Faint dark toast, smoke and coffee. A hint of chocolate. Plenty of roasted malt flavor plus moderately intense piney-woody-herbal hops. It finishes mildly bitter with some coffee.
O: a pleasing and tasty Black IPA with good balance for style and well hidden alcohol. Both aroma and feel approach a higher rating. .

12 ounce bottle from Sam’s Quik Shop. Near black, large foamy tan head, good retention. Aroma of chocolate, nuts, herbal and earthy hops. The taste is chocolate, roasted malts, nuts, earthy hops, dark fruits. Medium bodied, moderate lingering bitterness.

Pours a deep brown, verging on black, with smallish, creamy white head. Aroma of burnt toast, chocolate, coffee, hops roasted grain. Flavor is a bit on the burnt side, with coffee, chocolate, and some leather notes, along with a touch of dark fruit and some hop bite. Alcohol content is well-hidden.

Served on tap in a pint glass
Appearance – The beer is served deep-brown, almost black color with a one finger had of cream colored foam. The head has a moderate level of retention, slowly fading to leave a lighter level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the beer is quite heavy of a chocolate and caramel smell mixed with some other aromas of a pine and grapefruit smell. There are some lighter notes of tropical fruits and a little bit of grass thrown in the mix as well.
Taste – The taste begins with a chocolate malt flavor mixed with some caramel and a decent showing of roast. Along with these taste are some nice pine and grassy hop tastes, which start out light, but get stronger and stronger as the taste moves on. Other hop tastes of a citrus nature join in as the taste moves on all while some more pine and a woody like flavor develop later. With the caramel and chocolate fading a tad at the end, one is left with a balanced and moderately hopped roasted flavor to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is a tad thinner then I was anticipating all while the carbonation level was fairly standard. The lighter body did make for a nice medium as it keep it rather easy drinking and had enough robustness to uphold the hop flavors all while not making the roasted and sweet flavors from becoming the dominant flavor factor. Fairly well done.
Overall – A quite tasty black IPA. It is nice and balanced and has a good clean drinking taste which makes for one to try if you get the chance.

This is a very good black IPA - the best I’ve tasted. Pours a rich, deep brown with an ecru head and persistent lacing. Nose is pine, coffee and citrus. Taste is just the right blend of hops and malt with a citrus kicker at the back end. Mouthfeel is lush and the finish bitter with scallops of sweetness.

Pour on tap at Happy GNome, dark brownish black pour with tan head, aroma brought notes of dark chocolate, roast, some nice pine and orange peel hop notes into a bit of caramel, slight coffee. Taste was a mix of coffee, chocolate, roast into some smoke, nice pine, slight herbal notes iwth a hint of citrus, finishing bitter.
