3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 14/20
On tap at Bad Apple, Chicago. Vanilla bean and coffee roast on the nose, and a bit of carob. Sharp, almost powdery coffee flavor sits on top of somewhat fruity carob and nicely sweet milk chocolate. The choc morphs into a drier, Bakers variety in the finish. Smooth, medium body. Very flavorful for a porter. Vaguely nutty in the dry finish, with a slightly tangy and bitter hop character that took me a while to identify (though now it seems obvious). This is a sum less than the parts beer for me; I donít like it as much as I feel I should given how good my deconstruction sounds to me. Maybe because the dry finish (which is enjoyable in its own right and long-lasting) doesnít seem right following the slick sweetness in the beginning (which is also independently nice). Although the more I drink, the more its growing on me.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pours with a nice long lasting 1" dark tan head atop a very dark brown brew that does let a little light pass... only spotty lacing.
The nose shows plenty of coffee goodness... but there is a surprising and definitely discernible dark malt profile.... even a little bit of dried fruitiness that lingers even when cold.
The coffee is still very present on the palate, but a bit of acrid dark malt is a little bit distracting to me... the fruitiness is also there, but is more as a lingering element on the finish... pretty dry throughout...
Body is a solid medium with a nice ever present small bubble carbonation... sorta a creamy mouthfeel...

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
this is a coffee porter done to near perfection, and possibly my favorite GT brew. the roasted malt, chocolate, and other beer flavors are there just enough to balance this very smooth, creamy concoction. the 7.5 is just right as well, contributing to a big smooth body that is neither swimming in coffee or too alcoholic. very well done."

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
From 750 ml bottle, 2011. Pours dark brown, almost black with a healthy cappuccino-colored head. Nose (and flavor) is coffee, coffee, coffee, with chocolate notes and touch of caramel sweetness. Long coffee finish balanced with some lingering hops for a pleasing (coffee-like) bitterness.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
A: near black opaque with two fingers mocha foam. This falls over a couple minutes to a centrally capped sheet of the same. Spot lace.
S: Coffee, bittersweet cocoa, dry soil, some hints of cream. I candig it.
T: Again coffee, there;s some more coffee. Some toasted malts and bitter hops. Simple and somewhat elegant.
M: medium bodied with lively carb and a wet finish.
O: nice beer. Better a little warmer.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Dark brown pour with a tan head. The aroma has a lot of coffee and chocolate notes. The flavor is more of the same with a ton of coffee, chocolate and roasted malt. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Draft at happy gnome. Pours black with a thin khaki head that quickly dissipates. Muted coffee notes on the nose. Fairly faint coffee on the tongue as well with just a hint of leafy hoppiness on the finish. Iím not sure if Surly Coffee bender is still predominant in my mouth of if this beer is just underwhelming.

4.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
2011 year. Aroma is a complex combination of rich, roast notes with hints of sweet caramel mixed in. Reminded me of a toasted marshmallow. Pours a dark brown with a nice tan head that starts at about a half inch and settles slowly. The taste is absolutely fantastic. The coffee notes blend perfectly with the sweetness of the malts. Porters are not usually my cup of tea, but damn... I tasted dark chocolate and cherries mixed in, too. I have to say this is definitely in my to 10 beers.
