3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
1 L bottle, courtesy of Papsoe. Pours hazy dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma is wooden and dark malty. Light fruity accent. Smooth caramelish and roasted to dark breadish malt flavoured. Interesting with rather aromatic US hops to counterbalance the dense malt flavours. Gives a citric twist, yet also towards dominant in the flavour profile. Dry and citric into a dry finish.

4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
UPDATED: MAY 12, 2010 Upon reconsideration, this beer really is everything I remembered the first time...glad to have a couple extra of these! (1 Quart 1.8 fluid oz.) Murky brown with orange hue. Under light looks just like caramel. Head is melted coffee ice cream. Under certain lights, the murky brown almost hints at purple (wild looking). Aroma is burnt semi-sweet chocolate, espresso, boozy, fruit esters (berry). Flavor starts sweet syrupy and fades to bitter dark chocolate with hints of caramel and fruit sweet berry. Finish is bitter dry biting beautiful long lasting.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Heavily carbonated appearance w/ a deep red color almost brown when not held to the light and a thick small bubbled tan head that quickly dissipates. Nice aroma sweet toffees w/ a bit of dandelion and grassy hops. Nice palate well coated and smooth. Flavor is lots of light toffee and a good amount of bitterness for an ESB finishes grassy. Pretty simple but pretty good.

Sept 26th 2008 vintage 1 Liter swing top thanks to Nicole as a 30th birthday present. The beer pours to a really deep ruby body with a super thick creamy light brown head. The aroma is grassy and bitter with a deep malt and strong toffee. The flavor is deeply toasted malt with some dry pine grass hop. Bitter. Toffee on the finish. The palate is strongly bitter and medium bodied. Nice coating texture.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
2009 1L swing top bottle. Please, please stop wax dipping bottles like this. Pours dark brown a with a one finger, quickly dissipating, creamy, tan head; nice lacing when the head recedes. Creamy and foamy, a great looking brew that only takes one swirl for the head to be back in full swing. Aroma of resiny, piney hops, caramel malts, overripe plumbs, dark cherries. Love the nose. More bitter and less sweet than the nose indicates. The resiny, piney hops are in full force, but the caramel takes a back seat in favor of a toasted quality. As you drink, it gets more complicated. A subtle earthiness creeps in as well as light coffee. Finishes bitter and dry with some roastiness. Medium to full bodied with an oily mouthfeel and a low level of carbonation. Well balanced despite living up to its bitter heritage. Great brew, don’t underestimate it if you open the bottle solo.
