Commercial Description:
Sweetgrass India Pale Ale has been a GTBC staple since early 2002. Brewed solidly in the American IPA style, Sweetgrass is crisp and fragrant with a generous yet smooth hop character. XX Sweetgrass is all that twice over, with double the malt and double the hops--an astonishing three pounds per barrel in the kettle and another pound per barrel of "dry-hops" added after fermentation. The hops provide citrusy, resinous spiciness, making this beer a great match for any bold, flavorful food.

took me about 5 minutes to chip away at the wax seal on the swing top bottle. Once I did I was rewarded with a beautiful amber/orange pour with a nice off-white head. Aroma was so resinous as to almost be sticky. A little minty, a little bit of fruit and some strong malt characteristics. Flavor was not particularly hoppy. The malt tended to dominate and it was a weird sweet almost of flavor. Some caramel and molasses The beer almost tasted oily. I’m not sure if this beer just didn’t feel balanced to me or if there was something off in the malt flavor, but this wasn’t my favorite.

Colossal bottle with some really nasty wax on the fliptop, April 30, 2008 bottling. Poured an interesting shade of pinkish-orange with a short-ish cap of off-white head. The aroma picked up floral, citrus, and piney hoppage over a pale malt and caramel base.. sweet overall with a nice fruity note right on the back. The flavor opened with somewhat syrupy caramel that rolled across the tongue with toffee, lighter-skinned fruits, and biscuity notes trailing.. bitterness was moderate throughout with mostly citrus and floral character.. finished somewhat bitter, somewhat sour, and warm. Medium-plus bodied with decent balance on the palate.. tad soapy at times.. overall quite well put together.

Bottle from Big Z’s in Huntington NY, one liter swing top. I was expecting big, I got medium. Pale, slightly hazy, orangy red with a thick, sudsy white head. Nose is what you’d expect, grassy, piney, grapefruit. Flavor is bitter, slightly sweet, with tons of citrus. Medium bodied and bitter to the end. Somewhat of a let down, but also very drinkable for a imperial ipa.

Bottle. Deep clear brown/red with a thick ring of bubbles. Nose-PNW hops, cereal, sweet. Taste-medium sweet, light sweet grass clippings (maybe that’s where they got the name of the beer from?), light molasses, too sweet, brown sugar, hops re slightly understated but not bad, soap on the backend, slight lotion.

(bottle - wax sealed 1 L fliptop) God almighty, this was so difficult to get into. I can understand that it looks nice but good lord, what a stupid idea. Clear copper in color with a fizzy white head. Aroma is very floral with lots of hops and citrus. Some sweetness. Flavor is very floral and citrusy as well with a lot of sweetness and spice, some honey, and a very light touch of the hop bitterness. Definitely not as bitter as I thought it would be.

Bottle courtesy of sebletitje. Pours a clear copper color with a thin off-white head. Aroma is flowery with notes of citrus, grapefruit, some bready yeast. Flavor is somewhat sweet, somewhat spicy with notes of honey and hops. Medium body with a slightly bitter finish. Definitely not what I was expecting for a double IPA.

1 liter bottle. wax sealed swingtop equals pain in the ass. Pours a semi hazy orange with a 3 finger white head, good retention, great lacing. Aromas of malt, caramel, some citrus, some pine, hops, the malt is prominent though. Flavors are at first a bit of sweet malt, caramel, a little hops in the finish. Palate is medium to full bodied with nice carbonation. I imagine this was pretty good when fresh, but Im pretty sure I had it WAY to late.

Bottle, shared by hopscotch. Golden with a huge white head, nice lacing and copious amounts of it. A sweet honey and caramel malt aroma with citrus and pine hops breaking through. In flavor, caramel comes through more strongly than the hops, but its still very good. A mild bitter finish. Nicely carbed has a pretty crisp finish.
