COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask; Special (One Hop series)- March 2006.
Each beer features a single variety of hop from around the world. Every beer in the series undergoes five separate additions of the particular hop into the brew kettle. Whole hops are then added to the “hopback”, in which the hot brew passes on its way to the fermenter. All the beers will have the same degree of hoppy bitterness, and drinkers are able to compare the aroma, flavour, and pleasing aftertaste of each of the varieties. Instead of using specialty malts that might mask the flavour of the hop, only Maris Otter pale malt is used. Maris Otter is the finest strain of malt available. With only pale malt used, there is little to come between the hop lover and the hop.

Cask (gravity dispense) at London Drinker Beer Festival, March 2006. Making beers with just pale malts and a single hop variety can have drawbacks if the hop doesn’t have enough guts to carry the show. Which I thought was the case to some extent here. There’s a dab of citrus and a fair amount of bitterness but, without any robust malt backing I felt the overall effect was a bit neutral. Not a bad beer by any means but not as flavoursome as some in this series.

Cask (London Drinker 06): Golden in colour. Mildly fruity, mild grassy hops. Citric aftertaste. A little thin but refreshing.

London Drinker Festival 2006. Golden. Floral, hoppy aroma. To taste this has a certain character of boiled weeds and malt. Thin and boring.

Cask@London Drinker. A little on the thin side, but it has nicely aromatic hop characters, nice citric grapefruit-like bitterness in the finish, i just wish there was a little more of it. Nice though, and something i wouldn’t mind trying a again.

Cask gravity at London Drinker 2006. Golden with sweaty hop aroma. It’s fine. Good balance. Hop is green and gives good flavour. Another good beer from this range.

Tasted by half-pint at the London Drinker’s Beer Festival, 23/03/06. Gravity-dispensed. Dark golden hue, flat-bodied, without any beer head. Earthy, damp, leafy hops abound... I wonder if this hop is closely related to Fuggles? Very strong scent of hops indeed, yet pleasant. On the palate, the fruity(not sure which fruits) hops are backed by a light malty aftertone, in a clear-cut structure. Gradually the earthy flavour intensifies and lingers well towards the very end, before the palate is enriched with a kick of dryish bitterness from hops and a subtle bitter-sweetness from toasted malts. Clean palate and medium-bodied. Another nice and easy-drinking experiment~~
