Draft sample at Henry House. Aroma is not strong, light roasted malt smell. Black colour with a think cappuccino head. Taste was roasted malt, but rather thin. It was wasn’t a bad taste, but there wasn’t enough of it. Medium body. Overall, this had potential but it needed to deliver more.

Growler from the brewpub. Pours a near-black dark brown with a slight orangey tinge and modest-sized mocha head. Aroma is roasty with coffee and a hint of fruit. Flavour is dry and roasty with coffee and some chocolatey sweetness. Lingering dryness in finish. Nice.

On tap at the Toronto location, pitch black color, with a creamy tan-colored head, nice sweet mochaish, chocolatey, roasted malt nose with some vanilla, cappuccino, maple icecream accents, with a mild black coffee, molasses note in the aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with a yeasty, fruity, roasted, black, chocolate malt character with a dark bitter chocolate, roasted coffee bean flavour upfront, and some flowery hop, leafy, piney undertones, leading towards a juicy, dry hopped, faint roasty bitterness finish.

Bar Volo St. Patricks Day, on tap. Black body with beige head. Lacey. Dry stout, sour edge. Below average mouthfeel. Meets the style, some character. A tad of smoke. Earlier Rating: 5/2/2004 Total Score: 3.2 Surprising as better than local reviews would have it. Above standard of Guiness. Nice black color and retaining head. Creamy full mouth feel. Slight maltiness and bitterness, but more balanced. Toastiness
