[3381-20100923] Tap. Smokey wood aroma. Hazy, dark brown red body with a long-lasting foamy light tan head. Smokey tootsie roll malt flavour has a lingering grainy alcohol then a few seconds pass and BAM! the burnt wood and smoke hits. Full body. Interesting to try.

What a seductive drink - Pours deep brown with reddish tones against the light. Roastiness, coffee, chocolate, smoke, woodsiness all mix together. Nice lingering dry bitterness on the finish. Thick creamy mouthfeel. Great!

2010-09-24 at Cest What 2010 Fall Festival of Beers, day 1. Cask. Hazy deep reddish-brown with a large foamy tan head. Fantastic aroma - fairly deep roast malt, dry, but mostly classic Islay character: iodine, wool, even salty - and doused campfire ... no alcohol to speak of, and thankfully not sweet either. Flavour follows - some nice caramel added, but even more seaweed, hessian and hardwood ash - frickin’ great, but a tad overpowering ... I liked the aroma a bit more (better balance) so 7/10. Mouthfeel is astringent and a bit thin, acceptable carbonation, and a long, dry, smoky/woody tangy finish - very nice, not too much (although I love that type of Scotch, so I may be pro-prejudiced) - lovely beer.

Cask at ’Cest What Fall Festival of Beer’. Pours a deep dark amber-brown with an average size fizzy tan head. Aroma: Whoa, it’s very smoky, in a good way, I almost get bacon and other meat, along with roasted caramel malt. Smoky BBQ meat flavour -- just lovely -- along with roasted malt, some chocolate and a dry, light bitter finish. Average to medium bodied. Fantastic stuff!

Growler from the brewery. Pours a dark reddish brown with virtually no head. Big roasty coffee and smoky aroma. Taste is very smoky with some molasses. Some bitterness in finish. Interesting but I wasn’t wild about it.

Smoked porter. Remarkably unique flavour and aroma. On tap at the brewpub, bubbly head, dark reddish colour. Must try if available, though its flavour was so strong I was good with a single pint.

Aroma strong roast in aroma, smoked meat amber malts. Straight pleasantness. 7+
Appearance clear dark brownish-black with medium light, tanned top.
Flavor and Palate : Medium bodied. Top of palate was strongly accented by smoke. Softness of this ale was evident till late finish. Dark bitterness hinted below. Mild clean offering.

2010-09-23. Black body with a modest brown head that lingers. 4+ Aroma is a bit smokey with an interesting character to it that defies my analysis. Touches of caramel sweetness in the undercurrents, mild roast that foreshadows the flavour. 7+ Lightly smokey ashen roast overtones, modest roast throughout, finishes dry, pleasant, light bitterness throughout. 7+ Dry roast lingers in the finish and aftertaste. Smooth average plus palate. 3+ Solid but entirely to my own taste. On tap at The Granite, Toronto

On tap @ C’est What? Appearance: pitch black, small dirty White head. Aroma: lovely bacon and smoke aroma at first, malt, chocolate and alcohol. Flavour: delicious smoke, so rich, malty, iron, lots of bacon, tons of malt. Absolutely delicious! Well done Granite.

Enjoyed immensely outside at the brewpub. Wow factor: First the smoke breezes my way, and then a coffee black beer with lasting quaretr inch of white head, a little lace follows. Smooth mouthfeel, very drinkable smooth porter, excellently roasted malt, a little chocolate milkshake and coffee, sasaparilla. Cross-style black beer, imperial porter, understated smoke in flavour.
