A very special brew, originally made in honor of the 1,000th batch of beer brewed at our Sioux Falls brewery. Cascade and Summit hops dominate the flavor of this beer, giving intense citrus & pine character.

Pour on tap at the brewpub in Eagan, hazy orange red pour with white head, aroma brought notes of orange, grapefruit, slight grass into biscuit, slight peach, hints of earth. Taste was a mix of grass, orange, slight herbal notes into some biscuit, finishing spicy, herbal.

Don’t be fooled by the score - much like the rest of the Granite City lineup this release falls just shy of average. As uninspired as the rest of the drafts, this one would have been my go to only because by packing so many ingredients into the recipe they’ve produced something that lasts more than 30 seconds before all interest is lost.

Aroma / Appearance - A caramel orange body sticks to the sides while paired with a creamy ivory head. Grapefruit, mango, and muted bitterness open up in the air with a vibrant brightness that hints at yeast and cotton candy. Sadly though it fades like a morning fog leaving only traces behind.

Flavor / Palate - Bitter citrus sticks to the tongue longer than any other beer. The amped up recipe remains the likely culprit because after a minute or two it carries to a semisweet half hearted finish. Passable at least, this beer offers the best of any Granite City release I tried (not that I will be going back any time soon).

The Duke X2. Twice the good, flavor, taste, and nearly double the alcohol. Worth it.

Growler. No discernible hop aroma. Medicinal taste that is boozy. Not hIpod enough for a double ipa. Hazy Amber body with very little head or lace. Drinkable is the best thing I can say about this brew. But I will say again tha Bill Burdick did the craft beer world a disservice by selling out and closing Sherlock’s Home in favor of the granite city franchise which has actually set the craft beer movement back by turning off would be craft beer lovers by making them think craft beer is lousy.

Tap. Amber pour with a small ring of head. Smells like orange cleanser. Gross. Tastes bad too. Cleanser, perfume, and flowers. Yuck.

9/10/2014. On tab in Troy MI. Amber color with a white head. Caramel and malty aromas with hints of tropical fruit. Meh...

On tap at the cedar rapids brewpub. Kind of an ugly gray pour. Murky appearance and the flavor was kind of the same. Muddy flavors with a thin body. Not so much.

4 oz draft sampler pours hazy amber with a off white head. Aroma of citrus, floral and malts. Taste is a piney citrus and malts.

16 oz. pour, on tap at the Maple Grove, MN location of the brewpub. Listed as “Batch 1000 Dbl IPA.” Pours a clear copper/bronze with a small amount of beige head. Produces decent lacing. Nice, piney, citric smell (mostly piney). Cookie, pretzel, cleaning product, and chlorine scents. Smells like a freshly painted room. At first I legitimately enjoyed the smell, but the unappetizing chemical notes that were present from the beginning became increasingly evident as I consumed the beverage. Piney, lemon flavor. One dimensional taste: Very little malt presence in the flavor, although there is a touch of sweetness. There is a cracker and cardboard blandness to the flavor. I can taste the alcohol even though the beer doesn’t come across as particularly strong because the malt presence is so weak. Slightly chemical-y dry finish. Medium body. Lively and frothy in the palate. This is not an awful beer, although it is well subpar for the style. It hits the notes of a double IPA, it just doesn’t hit them all that well. Its flaws become increasingly apparent as I drink.
