COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A thick creamy head sits atop the opaque blackness of this traditional dry Irish Stout. Roasted chocolate and coffee notes make this beer a great treat.

came out ruby black with nice head and lacing. i’m excited to try something here with a little more to it but i guess this isn’t my day. roast on aroma and taste, thin and dry were the lasting impressions. i guess they’re content in brewing safe brew to appeal to the masses but i really wish they would have some fun.

At the Davenport IA restaurant. This one had the black color and dissipating head. A few faint roast notes, with a touch of licorice, coffee, and chocolate. Very thin body though. Not impressed.

This reminded me of a modern porter mixed with a dry stout rather than a "traditional dry Irish Stout". However, it was very good for what I was expecting based on the reviews here. As black and opaque as a good stout should be, it featured a thick mocha head of foam that lasted throughout the pint. Aroma was roasted malts and a bittersweet cocoa. Good bitterness in the flavor department, quite creamy-tasting. Maybe a tad too watery for its style.

On tap, Cedar Rapids IA location. Poured black with very good head retention. Mouthfeel was creamy. By sight and mouthfeel this seems to be a good beer, but the flavor just wasn’t there. There was a hint of coffee and chocolate flavors. The flavor just has no complexity to it. This was by no means terrible, it just has nothing to make me want to enjoy it. This probably could have been called Stout Lite.

Not too bad a stout for a mass-consumer brew pub like this. Dark brown to black in appearance, fair amount of head, moderate lacing. Roasty aroma, smoky flavor, just a hint of coffee and chocolate in the flavor. Mouthfeel’s a tad thin for a stout, though. Still, not bad, all things considered.

Aroma chocolate jet black color with tan head and lacing. Taste is dry, but not as dry as a Guinness. Best at granite city, but even this was a middle of the road stout. Very low hops, chocolate and very low sweetness. Would have again though

above average nitro stout.....not too wimpy, but just wimpy enough.....nice and roasty......i was a bit offended when i got the bill and saw that i was charged $5.25 for what they called 20 oz of beer. (it looked and drank like a pint to me) i’ll stop there, because if i don’t this will turn into a review of the restaurant not just the beer........

UPDATED: AUG 21, 2007 Dark black with a tan head that hung around for awhile. Aroma of malt, hops, roasted coffee beans. Flavor was similar but with added bitterness on the finish. Overall, the aroma and flavor were not strong and not very memorable. For a chain restaurant that is surely limited by what they are able to brew and the amount of creativity that goes into the brew, Broadaxe Stout does an average job. As a stout goes, again, average.

On draft at the Maumee, OH "brewpub". Only decent beer they had. Nice black color with a thin off-white head. Roasty aromas and flavors. It is at least drinkable which is more than I can say about their other beers.

A roasty dry lighter bodied stout. Not really bitter but a dominant roast character. Very light on the hops. Quite smooth finish. No real offensive notes.
