A thick creamy head sits atop the opaque blackness of this traditional dry Irish Stout. Roasted chocolate and coffee notes make this beer a great treat.

On tap @ the Granite City Food & Beer in the Indianapolis airport, concourse A. A thin offering, simple roast, cola-ish sweetness. Didn’t finish it.

UPDATED: DEC 29, 2013 Tap. Nice dark brown/black pour with a nice foamy cream head. Really nice chocolate and coffee aroma. Palate is impossibly thin - kills this beer. Taste is watery with similar elements as aroma.

Draft in a sampler at Granite City-Creve Coeur. Pours a very attractive, deep, opaque brown with a cascading creamy tan head that settles into a nice lasting cap. The aroma is roasty, with notes of chocolate, coffee, and some sugars. The flavor has dark chocolate, coffee, toasted sugar, and some bitter earthiness. The body seems initially full but quits quickly, if that makes sense. Bitter and gritty without having much substance. Moderate carbonation. Could be better.

Nitro pour at GTMW. Poured deep brown with a tall, creamy beige head. The aroma picked up sweet, toasty chocolate and nutty notes accented by a hint of lactose. The flavor found sweet chocolate and toasted black patent maltage at the core.. vanilla and light coffee bitterness surrounded and complemented well.. good moderate level of roast. Medium-bodied and creamy on the palate, especially due to the nitro pour.. nicely toasted and balanced.. candy-like.

Draft. Pours deep brown with a beige head. Mild roasted malts, some generic malty sweetness, faint coffee, and a muted and mild roasted malty finish. Pretty bland throughout, but no real off flavors.

I hate this place, but when one came to town, I had to try all the beers. They’re all average to bad. This one tastes like water mixed with a teaspoon of old coffee grinds.

Tap at Mishawaka location: Basically opaque with a creamy nitro tan head and very good lace. The best part of the brew is it’s appearance sadly. The aroma is very weak with roasted, oats, and chocolate malts, mineral water and charcoal. The taste is just like a Guinness Draft but with even less flavors, malty, mineral, slight plum, chocolate and an ashy dry finish... where are the Fuggles? Soft and creamy nitro mouth feel but alas it is watery and ashy. Whatever, it is not offensive, just not very good either.

Had at their St Cloud Mn location. Dark brown appearance - very thick mocha colored head with good lacing. Has a very good smoky roasted flavor and aroma. Faint coffee and chocolate notes come through in the flavor and aroma. All in all - pretty impressed with my visit to Granite City - seems to be a formidable brewpub.

At the Lincoln NE restaurant ... This is their best-looking beer, if that says anything. It’s black with a standing creamy head. But although it starts a bit creamy, it’s definitely just watery like the rest ... little flavor, just a bit of nutty bitterness. Bland. At least the food was good.

Tap: Pours a nearly black dark brown and is capped by a modest yet sustained tan head. The aroma’s fairly light for any type of stout, but it’s come some bittersweet chocolate and roasted coffee there if you sniff hard enough. A bit thin, but has a flavor of roasted malt & barley, coffee, chocolate, and some nuts. Dry finish.
