3.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 ElGaucho (1862) - Minnetonka, USA - AUG 20, 2002
UPDATED: MAY 5, 2005 5/5/05 Re-rate: Draught version. Not as good as I remember and from the stats (albeit only over 16 ratings) it appears the brew has slid over time. The best thing I can say about this brew is that it has a beautiful cloudy, reddish amber color. Some lace. This is basically hop juice. Not enough malty sweetness to counteract, and is therefore thin, lifeless and unbalanced. Some flavor flaws; almost enjoyable. Was improved when mixed with the Brother Benedicts Maibock, which also seemed watered down on its own. 8/20/02: Ar 9;Ap 4;Fl 7;Pal 4; Ov 15. Apparently Granite City carries, or sometimes carries, both the cask (room temp) and keg (cold) versions of this IPA. I have had the keg version, but am rating the cask version. It has a sweet, hoppy aroma with a cloudy reddish body, with a foamy head. A plum flavor is evident; good hop bitterness, yet not overbearing. I kept thinking my impression of the keg version was better. A good beer, but I recommend going with the keg version.

Classic IPA, a bit unbalance and with a clear tip over to the bitter spectrum. Very muddy to its appearance

Bottle. Beer of the month club. As "Duke Of Wellington Pale Ale". Clear amber color with a lovely big off-white head. Aroma of hops, maybe slightly stale, with citric, earthy and piney notes, and some malt, a bit caramelly and grainy. Later whiffs are more malty with light buttery notes. Sweetish malt flavor, grainy and caramelly, with light fruitiness and a moderately bitter hoppy finish. Medium-bodied. Pretty decent.

Amber hued straw body. Thin, soft head that quickly dissipates. Stale cereal grain character. Hay and dried grass with a touch of bitter root quality. A slight pinch of hops but nothing that truly stood out.

2.1 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20 jjgmd (298) - Coral Springs, Florida, USA - MAR 17, 2012
Rusty colored hazy pour. Small tan head, with more of a malty aroma than a typical IPA. Not packed with much flavor, kinda flat without any complexity.
Very little bitterness with a short and boring finish. Quite watery in fact. Do not be duped by this duke. Quaff Score 3 / 10
