Draft at HDG for daze of the Devil II. Pours a hazy orange with a small off white head. Aromas of grains, and bread with a very light touch of hops. Flavors of citrus, alcohol and bread. Man do I like good barley wines, to bad this isn’t one.

Some honey and orange and some other sweetness. Some odd bitterness. Different and not in a great way. Better warm.

Poured a murky brown gold color with a small, off white head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of light floral hops, pils malt, some pine, citrus, toffee, and a bit of toasted dough. Taste was woody, with some vanilla, honey, light cherry, and alcohol in the finish.

On tap at the Hop Devil Grill. Admittedly it wasn’t a fantastic or authentic version of the style; however I found it pretty tasty. Flavor had some interesting elements to it. Some sweetness and honey. Pretty decent version.

UPDATED: JAN 11, 2008 On tap at HDG. Gold with decent head retention. Flavor is on the fruity side with some pineapple and a strong medicinal flavor. My barleywine blows this away. Seriously, I hear this guy can really brew, so I hope the dubbel is much better.

Tap at Hop Devil Grill. Pale amber-orange beer with no head. Chewy and sweet on the aroma with loads of orange blossom honey and some citrus fruitiness. Extremely sweet and cloying with loads of orange peel and honey. It’s really more like a sweet mead than a barely wine but not a great example of either. Fatty and underattenuated. Bleh.
2.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 MartinT (6350) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - APR 30, 2007
My Bottom Line:
Humble base malt flavors are swimming in alcohol, as scattered hop vests are thrown around to attempt salvaging them. This is a cleanly-brewed, but highly soporific blond Barley Wine.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-There is no foam to be seen atop the hazy blond.
-This is nearly scentless, aside from some honey and alcohol sharpness.
-Another Great Adirondack strong ale I just can’t get into.
-Some citrusy, wooden hop presence appears when looked for.
-It definitely lacks malt development and hop definition to be worthy of a thumbs up within this broad style.
-Some milkiness is found in the nose.
On tap at Tap NY.
