On tap GABF ’02: BIg roasted aroma, full creamy mouthfeel, black ruby color with a good head, starts sweet, ends a little bitter and an aftertaste that never goes away.

20-Jan-08 (Draft: Great Bear Brewing Co. in Wasilla, AK) This porter has apparently undergone a recipe change lately as it’s pretty hearty. Very toasty, rich milk chocolate, loads of coffee, it’s lightly sweet and medium in bitterness with a moderately roasty finish. Medium-full body from start to finish and medium in carbonation. Light tartness and roasty bitterness balance the mouthfeel and keep the palate from becoming stale. Very toasty nose with lightly sour chocolate and mild coffee aromas. Just a shade lighter than black, this beer is even opaque at the edges. Half an inch of dark-tan head holds a thin layer and leaves patchy lace on the glass. Almost as impressive as Pioneer Peak itself, Kai (did I spell that right?) has done a great job with this beer.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours a deep brown with amber highlights and a smaller tan head. Aroma of caramel, chocolate, some cofffee. Flavors of the same. Nothing too special here. Thin...

GABF 2004 - Sour, brown ale-like aroma of caramel, maple and vanilla. Thin body, typical porter but on the weak side... Flavor has a small vegetable component, with some tobacco as well.

Had on tap at the brewpub in Wasilla. Dark red to light brown appearance, but very thin with not much of a head. Faint, coffee and chocoalte aroam - but you hav to rtry hard. Some slight coffee noites with an underlying fruity sweetness. Slightly thin mouthfeel. Not the best Porter- but not bad for a brewpub.

On tap at the 2003 Great Alaska Beer and Barley Wine Festival. Deep Garnet color aound the edges with nice beige head and an almost smokey roast nose. Dry, roast coffee flavor with nice hop bitterness in the finish. Good porter.
