Dark and full-bodied, this is our interpretation of the classic English Porter style. Made with nine varieties of malt and assertively hopped, our porter is packed with flavor. Strong coffee and chocolate tones create a special brew for those advancing on the path of fine beer appreciation.

On tap at the Great Dane in Fitchburg. Black pour from a cask. Moderate lacing on the glass. Aroma of cocoa, roasted malt, leather. Taste is the same, roasted malt, coffee, chocolate. Medium body, slightly thin finish. Still a full flavored and long lingering roasted brew. A great cask porter. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Had it tap at the Great Dane downtown location in Madison. Poured black with a whisper of a head and no lacing. Light coffee aroma and a great coffee/ beer taste.

Pours dark brown with frothy tan head. Heavy malty aroma with hoppy notes. Balanced malty sweetness with a bit of hoppy finish makes for an overall amazing porter. Love the heavy dark cocoa nibs aroma and hint of coffee on the finish

Draft at the downtown location. Not sure if the name was affecting me but yes this was a dark, earthy porter with bitterness from dark chocolate and cold coffee. I liked it.

Sultry, earthy aroma of dirt, ashes, charcoal and tobacco. Intense chocolate with smoke in the finish of the flavor. Smooth body but it goes flat quickly (?). Still, bold and enjoyable. (on tap at brewpub)

Imperial pint at the downtown GD brewery. Somehow, after over a decade of visiting the Dane, I finally got a full glass (rather than a sampler) of their porter. It’s delicious and an above average abv kicker. There’s no abv listed above, but I suspect it’s ~6.5%-7%. It sits right in that middle ground where you can tell you’re getting your money’s worth, but it’s still not a baby-sips drinking pace situation. In other words, Black Earth is very drinkable. It’s pitch black, lightly carbonated, thin brown foam layer. Malted liquor smell and taste. Oats, coffee and chocolate - the usual subjects of porters - show up in a nicely delivered, very traditional package. Two things are unexpected here: (1) the aforementioned abv presence and (2) a lighter than average body. The carbonation is very subdued, which lends to the malty feel. I look forward to having this one in the wintertime.

Hand pull served to a house pint glass at the downtown GD on Doty with a black/brown hue, a substantial head of tan froth, and waves & spots of lacing. The nose was roasty malt, with cocoa taking the lead, coffee following up, and a touch of caramel. The flavor contributed a dry and earthy hop bitterness. The body was medium while the soft carbonation from the engine pour prompted the texture to come off a little watery. The finish remained roasty and dry. A decently flavorful Porter from my favorite rallying spot before and during GT preparties.
