First of all... this is a damn good porter. Dark brown/black color with a creamy light brown head. Bourbony chocolate covered raisin aroma. Taste is a bitter coffee, chocolate, raspberry thing. Very good!

This hand-pullled monster creates a dense tan head on a black, earthy (well named, eh?)brew. Very assertive. Nice dark chocolate with burnt flavors that borders on a west coast stout in flavor. Nice use of hops and alcohol to reign in the huge body. This is not an English porter. The hop usage make it American all the way.

Lots of chocolate in the aroma, rich sweet chocolate taste. Gentle "porterish" tartness, just enough to remind you that this beer IS a porter and not just some stout. According to the brewer at the Fitchburg location this is a very popular "gateway" beer for him.

Mild scent w/ little carbination.. hint of chocolate in the smell. This is a black beer, that holds little head, but has a full flavor strongly hinting of chocolate w/ a hint of hopps

may be one of the dane's best beers that are available all the time. Rich, dark body, dense tan head. soft nose of mild roast and sweet chocolate. Coffee and chocolate dominate the flavor in a smooth supple mouthfeel. Perhaps it could dry out a bit better, but good stuff nonetheless.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: APR 5, 2004 Hand-pumped. Thick lasting head, sweet mocha and slightly fruity aroma. Huge flavors complemented by a full body and silky mouthfeel. Very chocolatey and sweet, more than one might be a little cloying. Can't believe it took me this long to try their porter. I was turned off by some of the bad reviews here.

Black body with small brown head. Aroma is malty, cherry, mildly sweet. Taste is intensely sweet upfront, cherry then sour. Minimal roasty aftertaste.

Black color, with a coffee scent. Had a cherry/coffee flavor that was way, way too sweet for a porter. Not good.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Awesome, well balanced thick chewy porter with strong sweet and robust traits; typical bitter chocolat and coffee dominate, but licorice and vanilla also might be detected. I loved it, far and away the best of the six I had at GD.

Lingering soft palate, good overall. After being out on Mad-town all night I came back to put a cap on the night with a second Black Earth Porter. If you have ever been to Black Earth, Wisconsin you know they arenít kidding!
