COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Dark and full-bodied, this is our interpretation of the classic English Porter style. Made with nine varieties of malt and assertively hopped, our porter is packed with flavor. Strong coffee and chocolate tones create a special brew for those advancing on the path of fine beer appreciation.

Pours black with tan head that fades quickly. Strong aroma of dark chocolate and coffee with a peanut butter finish. Flavor is mostly dark chocolate with some maltiness. Too chocolatey for me.

Oh, yum! Big chocolate aroma and a very sweet (borderline milk stout) taste to go with a medium body. The finish is long and sweet with just a hint of dryness. The wisdom of the RateBeer crowd puts this brew among the top of the Great Dane offerings, and I was very glad to have that advance knowledge before making my first visit to a Great Dane restaurant.

Beer engine, pours almost black, thick tan head that lasts. Aroma : moderate chocolate, coffee, sweet, roasted malt, hint of pine. Taste moderate roasted malt, chocolate, hop bitterness in finish. Heavy body, silky, almost creamy. This could be an imperial stout. Delicious

Enjoyed on tap at the downtown brewpub. One of the better beers here, coffee grounds and coffee more than chocolate, 35 IBu and 6.25% abv. Black with some head. a little acidic. Coffee in the nose. Above average mouthfeel.

UPDATED: AUG 26, 2011 On tap at downtown location. Strong aroma of chocolate and coffee. Super thick body, milky, great roasted flavor. Surprisingly excellent. By far the best beer in an otherwise unremarkable lineup.

On nitro tap at Great Dane brewpub, Madison WI. Inky black with inch-thick frothy white head that dissipates by about 75%. Thick sheets of lacing. Nose is quite smoky, with a bit of strong coffee, chocolate and a hint of anise. Chocolatey on the tongue, with more coffee, smoked meat, and a hint of brown sugar. Very easy-drinking.

Apr 22, tap @ Great Dane Brewery, Fitchburg. Pours deep brown with a nice small tan head. Aroma is coffee, roasted malts, carmel and notes of chocolate. Great flavor of coffee, roasted malts, chocolate and hoppy tartness, well balanced. Finishes bitter tart wth a touch of chocolate and a coffee.

Much better Porter than the Cascade. Like this name suggests, this beer is literally black, you can just barely see through the glass. A deliciously sharp Porter taste.

On tap at the brew pub...Pours a medium brown with lots of ruby on the sides. I’m flummoxed here because its called Black Earth, this beer should be super dark, disappointing. A light tan head with good retention but poor lacing...A medium aroma that is sweet with a little roasted coffee on the back, not at all bitter which is surprising but the taste is really bitter from start to finish. Coffee, almost too much with a butterscotch finish. A decently average porter, try if you there but that’s about as far as I can go

On tap at brewpub, pours a very dark brown with a thick tan head and lacing in the glass, the aroma is of roasted malt and some caramel mixed in, very smooth and heavy roasted aftertaste, pretty darn good.

On tap at the brewpub downtown. Pours a black body with an inch thick, dense and creamy, light brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves plenty of lacing. Aroma is roasty with some milky and dark chocolates, caramel, coffee, and a touch of earth. Flavor is pretty nice. Plenty of sweet chocolates and caramel with a solid roast backing. Lots of earth mixing with the coffee and roasts making this fairly bitter in a dry finish. Lengthy aftertaste following a medium, smooth, soft body and carbonation. Overall, a pretty nice porter. Lots of bold, balanced flavor and easy drinking.
