COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is the first installment of three different bocks that we are going to have on tap over the next few weeks. The “Dominator” is characterized by a luscious malt profile and a smooth mouthfeel from the extended lagering time (about four weeks at 32.5 degrees farenheit). This full-bodied beer also has a decent amount of alcohol, a bit more than the Scotch Ale.

Medium caramel-amber, cream-colored head is small but dense, leaves a respectable lacing. Sweet honeyed malt aroma with some fresh bread elements. Flavor begins nice, sweet, malt syrup, honey, then takes an off dive at the finish towards bread crusts, with some stale, metallic notes. Full bodied, pronouncedly syrupy but escapes being cloying.

tmoreau (2424) - Lombard, Illinois, USA - MAY 2, 2011
On tap at Great Dane-Doty for the beginning of Madison Craft Beer Week, and dispensed to a pint glass with a clear, mahogany color, modest, off white head foam that persisted as a ring and layer of film, and wavy cling to the lacing. The aroma was toasty, with caramel, sweetness, and plenty of smooth malt. The flavor added some moderate hop bitterness and a touch of toffee to the medium+ body, with a little dryness at the finish. A smooth, hefty Doppel, with a bit of warmth.

I had this one last week after a few other brews and it pretty much finished me off. Really great tasting and super filling. Pours a dark but translucent copper colour with a small white head. Malt profile is noticeably upfront but integrated well with fresh hop notes. Big full bodied taste with a soft fruity undertone, it’s got some rich caramel notes running straight through it. Fantastic beer

On draught at the downtown Madison Great Dane brewpub. Pours a semi-clear reddish amber color brew with a thin off-white head that quickly dissipates to a thin ring. Aroma of caramel malt, brown sugar, toffee and some mild alcohol. Taste is medium bodied, flavors of toffee, dark pitted fruits, caramel malt and some floral hops. Finish is semi-sweet with a brown sugar and caramel malt aftertaste with some mild bitterness.

good, not great. low carbonation, nice sweet brown sugar flavors, a slight alcohol burn.

On tap at the downtown location, pours dark red with a thin white head. Nothing much in the nose, and flavors were lacking imagination. It kinda had that cheap-Genny Light-hangs-around-too-long taste, finishes just a little malty. Gonna have to give this a "meh" rating.

Draft at the brewpub. Poured a clear copper color. Head was off white and left a bit of lace behind. Smelled of dark fruits and subdued alcohol. Medium bodied with alcohol, toffee, and plum flavors. Decent, but I didn’t like it as much as some of the previous raters.

Moderately malty flavor with a surprisingly clean finish. One of my favorite local dark beers.

Mostly translucent and amber-bronze in color with a persistently thin and creamy tan sheet with pinhole sized bubbles, pocked consistently at the surface. Frothy tan cream dominates the edges with toasty marshmallow lacing. Plum pudding, grahams, copper, caramel and light chocolate-covered toffee project a typical and solid nose. Some cinnamon hints at brown sugar and maple oak, and moves us beautifully toward the upswing in flavor. Oozy oil seeps in, with aggressive flavor intonations grasping honey suckle, brandied figs, rum raisin and maple bark shavings. Titillating bitterness is beyond typical IBU ratios, but it’s part of its character and well appreciated in this rendition. Greasy palate wonder achieves perfection, while some alcohol sentiments turn some attention to woodsy, sweetened pepper. Butterscotch, pepper and spicy caramel reverberate lovingly long after the drink is done. Impressive.

Ughsmash (7135) - Pewaukee, Wisconsin, USA - MAR 12, 2006
UPDATED: APR 15, 2009 Growler from Madison. Clear deep cherry/chestnut pour with a a great initial cap of beige head (receded to a ring and light wispy coverage). Nose was decidedly malty with dark fruits, caramel, and some alcohol (this strengthens as it approaches room temp). Flavor was fuller than the nose, with deep, almost roasty dark fruits (plum and vinous notes), mildly sticky caramel, and a hint of woodiness... with alcohol and bitter highlights. Just a little more than medium-bodied on the palate, and sticky from the sweet dark malts. Balance was quite nice. Very solid brew! 7 4 8 4 15

On tap at Great Dane. Poured medium coppery-brown with a short-lived cap of tan head. The aroma was on the sweet side with toasty caramel, chocolate, and lesser dark fruit represented.. spicy and engaging on the back. The flavor was a little more aggressive with warmth, but it was still well-balanced.. rich caramel and nutty notes at the core.. spicy and herbal bitterness surrounded.. a touch rough with alcohol on the finish. Heavier-bodied with moderate carbonation on the palate.. again hot at the back, otherwise a decent feel.
