Pours a clear red tinged brown with slight tan head. Aroma is very good with notes of cherries, dark malt, caramel and toffee. The flavor is a bit disappointing because the sweetness is a bit pronounced but overall I enjoyed the sweet cherry flavor. A slight booze finish and a medium body make for a great beer though.

A dark reddish amber barley wine with mahogany hues and a thin mocha head. In aroma, sweet peaty malt, we dough, warming alcohol, a bit boring. In mouth, a sweet malty barley wine, lightly vinous notes, treacle, burned caramel, not verry hoppy, On tap at the Istmus Beer and Cheese, Jan 21 2012.

Sample at brewpub
A nice sized sample was provided by the generous bartender while I was finishing up my previous beer. A great winter warmer this is a prototypical barleywine. Instead of an over the top malt and hop bomb it has a good balance that doesn’t wear down the palate. One pint would be more than enough to warm one on a cold winter day however.

Aroma / Appearance - Deep ruby red, the body shimmers in dim light. Minimal carbonation is to be expected as are the long spindly legs. Caramel, cheesecake, malt, and an earthy vinous nature hold the attention for a long time. The total package is like walking through an old wine cellar full of vintage bottles.

Flavor / Palate - Sweet and vinous, the mouthfeel coats the mouth with a relaxing texture. Chewy from the time it hits the senses to a creamy finish, this release sets an ideal mood for a winter evening. The caramel aftertaste is driven by malts which does become a little cloying over time. Otherwise this is a solid beer.

Poured in a snifter, clear burgundy color with a thin, rocky head that lasts. Moderate malt aroma and flavor. Heavy body, almost silky, with a nice alcohol burn. This is a nice beer, not an over the top barley wine.

On tap at the GD brewpub in Madison, Wisconsin. Pours into a snifter a dark reddish brown with small tan head. Foam cap, decent lacing. Nose is fig, pomegranate, caramel, toffee, herbal. Taste is more caramel and fig, apricot, ripe apple, maple. Syrupy mouthfeel, mouth-coating finish. Extremely sweet and malty. Wonderful for this blizzard weather.

On tap @ the downtown Madison location - Pours deep mahogany into a snifter, with a small white ringed head. Sweet nose, with lots of caramel, some brandy heat, a bit of nutty roastiness, and a touch of raisins. Taste is tons of caramel and sweet malt, with some light herbal hops and a touch of roast on the finish. It’s fairly big and chewy, but smooth and without much heat. I like my barleywines sweeter and less hoppy, and this fits the bill.
