Draft at the brewpub. Poured a clear orange brown color. Head was thin, off white, and left a bit of lace on the glass. Not much in the way of aroma other that light grainy malt. The same grainy note came out again in the flavor and was accompanied by malty caramel and a subdued nuttiness. Creamy, smooth, and slightly sweet on the tongue.

On tap.
Pours a clear dark auburn; thin head that leaves spots of lace. Dry, nutty, toasty grain aroma is a little unusual for a Scotch ale; this smells more like a standard brown ale. One sip removes all doubt that this is indeed a scotch ale: malty, chocolatey, creamy and sweet with a subued dry grain. A light hop presence shows up later. Smooth, creamy palate reminiscent of a nitro-drawn beer. This is one heck of a scotch ale.

(Tap) Pours an amber/brown color. Sweet toffee and nutty notes, with only a small amount of hops detectable. Not very balanced, but drinkable given the fact I only tried the sample. A so-so Scotch ale.

Had on tap while visiting friends in Madison, and picked up a growler to bring home. Pours a dark ruby red witha thick light tan head that laces nicely. Potent malty aroma with some woody and smokey notes and some evident light hops. Slightly bitter with a dry roastiness to the body. Finishes bitter sweet. A very smooth rich beer. Quite good.

Clear dark amber with no head. The aroma is very faint with some raisins and toffee. The flavor is semi-sweet, caramel and a bit of pine. Medium body with a bitter end.

On tap at the Fitchburg Great Dane location. The bronze colored body had a very faint head and scents of roasted melts and cherries mingled with some light flowery tones. In the body there were cherry, caramel butter and oak flavors competing for my attention. Overall it was exceptionally creamy and smooth with a nice semi-sweet finish. At the very end I detected hints of bitterness to balance out the experience. Enjoyable and a great standy for those times when you can’t make up your mind.

UPDATED: NOV 18, 2007 On tap at the brewpub on 6/22/07: Pours a transparent dark mahogany with a thin-lacing wispy off-white head. Aroma of sweet earthy caramel malt with lightly smoky peaty complexity. Body starts with a viscous sweet dark caramel maltiness with some light fruity esters and a full, yet smooth finish with lingering seaweed and smoke. A very nice Scotch ale.

On tap at JPDIPSO’s: Pours a dark copper with a thin, wispy, off-white head. Aroma has some dry, peaty and caramel malty notes. Body starts with some mildly sweet caramel malt and dry peaty flavor with a thin palate and finishes with a touch of English hops. A pretty average Scotch ale.

On tap at Great Dane - Fitchburg. Pour was a clear ruby with a short beige head and some nice lacing. Crisp caramel, toasted nuts, and some flowery noble hoppage found the nose... very nice. Floral hops, butterscotch, and sweet caramel were there for the flavor... rather heavy malt backbone... and a hint of alcohol around the edges. Smooth on the palate, but a little tacky at the finish and the alcohol presence was a bit heavy at the end. Aroma and flavor both picked up some earth character as this warmed. Certainly enjoyable.

Very soft texture. Basic malt flavors. Mild hops. Had this candy -- hard caramel type candy - flavor, an almost gritty white chocolate flavor. The nice sot texture was a bonus.
