The method for producing our ESB replicates centuries-old British brewing practices. Wooden Ships ESB is tapped directly from our British casks or “firkins,” where it has undergone a secondary fermentation and additional dry-hopping. In observance of traditional ways, this ale is served warmer than regular beers (but not warm!) and with minor carbonation. What may seem odd to some will become the standard for others!

Pours light brown with ivory head from a cask. Grassy notes on the nose, with a little leather. Piney grass on the palate, finishes semi-sweet.

Tap, on cask at the downtown Great Dane. Hazy reddish brown pour with small white head. Smells like mild hops and caramel. Taste isn’t as sweet: slight hops and toffee nuttiness. Very sessionable.

"Had this on tap a couple times last night at the Great Dane Hilldale. I believe they were calling it Wooden River, but it’s the same recipe. Pours a clear but darker reddish brown. Aroma is nutty, some mild hop notes, but otherwise semi sweet and floral. TAste is clean, light and creamy with just a touch of hops near the finish. Realy well balanced brew."

On tap at the brew pub...A light copper beer with some really really nice carbonation...Really light aroma of bread but that’s about it, way to plan...The taste is equally dead, only a little alcohol and hops come through. Easy to drink but not sure why you would at only 3.4% unless you trying to drink all day.

Enjoyed on tap at The Great Dane downtown Madison, WI, pours a cloudy amber with a thick creamy white head, the aroma is of sweet malt and flavor is creamy with a decent malt balance, nothing special but not terrible.

Faint aroma... not really much there... really malty with no bitterness... this was just all around bland and it’s tough to find anything to write about it

(Cask) Pours a clear amber body with a medium creamy off-white head. Aroma of earth, nuts, florals, and caramel. Flavor of grass, earth, malty, and light pine with a bitter finish.

On the hand-pull at the lounge/pool room bar in downtown Madison. Poured to a GD pint glass a cloudy, brownish orange/amber, with off white, bubbly foam and clingy lacing. The aroma was of pleasant caramelly malt, and a hint of fruit sweetness. The flavor added a touch of citrus and moderate hop bitterness. With the low carbonation, the body felt a little light, but finished off with a nice dryness.

16 oz draft on tap at the brewpub (Madison, WI). Poured on cask, a thick dark amber body, opaque pour with creamy cakey offwhite head that laces exceptionally well. Aromas are a bit sweet, caramel and cream off the bat, with light florals. Mellow sweetness wins the day, slight biscuit, light. Initial is cask, caramel and toffee sweetness come on with a bit of pang of citrus and florals, touch of orange rind. Bitterness and citrus lingers over the sweetness, which dies out considerably. Amber feel, with some good hop. Impressive for a domestic cask ESB.

Cask at the Wausau brewery. Amber color. Sweet, malty and very smooth, although I did detect a bit of butteriness in there.
