To celebrate the brewery’s 19th Anniversary, Great Divide’s brewers deviated from previous years’ anniversary ales and developed an entirely new recipe. The label reads, 19th Anniversary Ale isn’t just a wood-aged ale. It’s a compass – a reminder of where we’ve been and where we’re going. Brewed with pure birch syrup and aged on birch wood, this beer embraces reverential tradition and revolutionary innovation. As we celebrate our 19th year, we hope you’ll join us for the road ahead.

Sharp and clean light amber pour with a thin white head. Rich and sweet nose, booze shows pretty sharply. Wood adds a creamy and almost vegetal quality. Sharp and unappealing flavor. Vegetal and slightly astringent. Boozy with a medium full body. Did not care for this one.

Old notes. Bottle at home, 2013-08-23.
App: Honey golden with a slight mist and a cream white fine head leaving a nice speckled lace.
Aroma: Caramelly sweet and citrus hoppy with burnt almond confect, spun sugar, oranges and grapefruit, carambola, banana peel, sauna wood, pine and alcohol.
Taste: Pretty sweet and marmalade fruity with bright tropical fruits like oranges, grapefruit, carambola and mango with some pale syrup, pine, alcohol and wood.
Palate: Big body with soft "popping" bubbles. Sticky texture.
Overall: Big, sweet, warming, sticky and bitter. Maybe not all too fresh and also a bit sticky sweet...ah what the heck, it’s pretty good!

(Bottle) Pale orange colour with frothy, off-white head. Fruity, malty nose with apricots, citrus, fresh wood, pineapple, toast and a whiff of alcohol. Malty, fruity taste with citrus, apricots, fresh birch wood, vanilla, toast, pineapple, grapefruit and a generous citric bitterness in a finish with a certain alcohol glow. Almost full body, sweet. Soft and rounded malt character, but the wood and alcohol gets a bit dominant after a while. Quite nice.

3/14/15. Bomber bottled May, 2013. Mild citrus and pine nose. Birch is definitely the primary flavor. Alcohol is not dominating and has rounded out a bit. Nice strong ale but nothing special. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

UPDATED: FEB 6, 2015 July 9th, 2013 - Great Divide’s 19th Anniversary Ale practically crowns itself for the awkwardly numbered occasion with a great, huge cap of foam, and below it a sweeping robe of glowing, murky bronze. The smell is curious at first, with some birch wood, and a licorice and herbal scent. Molasses coats this botanical bounty, causing the first round of confusion, and then the smell of dark pipe tobacco kind of brings everything back together, since it too is a plant product often souped up with sweets and sugars for the mild-mannered pipe smoker. The beer is light and velvety on the palate, but the flavor is pungent, with more of that herbs n’ molasses combo, as well as some lighter sweeteners like honey or agave nectar. And then we get that powerful, knocking, resounding birch beer flavor that practically screams: birch, birch, birch! And pine, too, which is deep and extremely rich, almost more akin to a dark maple syrup.
