COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This Belgian-style Ale is a golden example of our traditional bold character, but with a little something special to commemorate this milestone. Fermented with Viognier grape juice, 20th Anniversary is both delicate and assertive. Big without being brutish, cunning without being cloying, this is a grown-up beer for a big-time celebration.

Hazy golden color. Sweet fruity aroma of bread and small citrus hints. Fruity taste with a bit much yeast. Lingering finish with spices and citrus.

June 1st, 2014 - Great Divide is celebrating a huge landmark with the gorgeously labeled 20th Anniversary Ale, a cloudy, thick, pudding like body of a brew with a similarly creamy head to match. The dense fog of the body settles up top, gradually peeling away near the bottom of the glass, eventually turning into a clearer brew, providing a full body spectrum for the eye to linger on. The aroma is crammed with Belgian yeast scents, with tons of freshly unwrapped, chalky, dusty blobs of Bazooka Joe (old fashioned) bubble gum. Globs of overripe banana mush, ripe for a shake or a smoothie, are present in the aroma, too, and decorated with brown sugar and vanilla. The thick caramel sweetness of the aroma finds is mismatched with the flavor, tangy, tangy, tangy. Banana appears here too with a slight fermented booze edge, but that funky tang reminds me of a pear doused in liqueurs, or a freshly sliced pear hiding under a sheet of greek yogurt, garnished with clove and dry grains, like a saison.

Bomber into a tulip. Pours a hazy yellow, with a big white head that quickly fades. Nose is Belgian yeast notes of cloves, bananas, and licorice. Taste is that of a typical Belgian strong ale, with a dry finish containing a hint of grapes. Nice.

Pours a hazy medium yellow. Aroma is lightly malty, hoppy, yeasty. Flavor is moderately sweet, highly alcoholic, with a nice hop bite to it.

Bottle from Systembolaget. Fruity and light yeasty spicy. Similar taste with a bready aroma. Fairly sweet. Smooth mouthfeel. Nice and well made.

Poured into a snifter. 3.5 A: Pours a hazy straw yellow with a touch of brown in it. Two fingers of frothy off-white head. Retetntion is below average and a half finger of bubbly lacing is left. 3.75 S: Smells like an imperial saison to me. First thing that sticks out is a grassy hay and a ruddy earthiness. White grape follows behind with peppery spicy undertones. Lemon, a touch of bready yeast, cake frosting, and banana. 3.5 T: Well this tastes nothing like it smells. Foremost, thereís a pretty healthy bitterness that comes out of nowhere. The saison flavors are still right there. Hay, earth, even a touch of funk. The white grapes probably have something to do with this. Peppery underneath. Much of the fruitiness found in the nose is diminished. 3.5 M: Lighter body. Good spritzy carbonation. Even a touch of creaminess. The finish I donít care much for. Itís bitter and has an almost industrial component to it. 3.5 D: I wouldnít have made this for a 20th anniversary, but itís okay for a try I guess. Edit: This tastes a million times better with all of the yeast mixed in. The supreme bitterness is gone. The finish is much improved and offers some sweetness canceling out most of the harsh flavors. It tastes pretty much the same, but the sweetness somehow trapped in the yeast brings a good balance. I adjusted my scores to be the median between the original review and this update. ★ 1,431 characters DavoleBomb, Oct 28, 2014

Cloudy golden with a thick white head that dissipates quickly. Aroma is vague hint of grape underneath a bit of yeast. Very mild. Flavor is mildly funky with somewhat sweet grape. Very effervescent. Not bad. Wife: 3.3

Bottle 65 cl. Pours pale yellow with a slight haze and a lively yet dissipating white head. Very spicy aroma, citric and zesty. Rich body, malt base has a strangely rotten note, very unpleasant. I have no clue whatís going on here, but itís not nice at all. 010915
