Bottle #266 of 461. Year 08, bottle courtesy of Brewtopia!! Back to Colorado for my rating. Even though Iíve had this beer every year itís been out I have never rated it. It seems fitting that I get a bottle from the first year to see how it handles the year of time.
Iíll say this, itís time to start a vertical of this one.
Murky dark brown sugar pour. Still carbonated well and oxidized just right by the barrel aging. Lots of stuff left on the bottom of the bottle fr years of proper cellaring. Sweet malty smell. Nothing but grain, bourbon, oak and dried tree fruits. Taste is malty goodness into the dries tree fruits with an oakey, vanilla, bourbon tannin biting the tongue for several minutes after the first sip.
Donít hesitate @ the 25-30$ price tag. U wonít be disappointed.

Draft at GD. Dry, aromatic barley wine - complex, a little citrus, fine aroma. Glad I got a chance to try it.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Aromas of oak, toffee, figs, raisins, molasses, beef jerky, leather, whiskey, spices, herbs and heavy liquid malt extract syrup. Appears a deep, dark mahogany with a purple tint and no foam at all. Taste is huge barrel notes, oak, raisin and whiskey upfront. Mid palate comes a quick sweetness of pitted dark fruits, plums, figs, dates and toffee. Finishes smooth with sharp bitterness, herbs, spices, whiskey, oak, melted caramel, nougat, blackberry juice and barrel wood. Overall, this beer is really impressive. Comes in layers of complexity and huge booze comes out as it warms. Really well done. The barrel did wonders.

Not sure if this is 2013 or 2011 vintage
Pours a murky walnut color, head is a small 1/4 inch and creme colored. Lacing is above average and head retention is average.
Smell is of rich toffee and caramel candy. Next is roasted malt, charred oak and whiskey with a hint of vanilla. Hops arenít present and alcohol is definitely there.
Taste is heavy on caramel, butterscotch, diacetyls, and charred oak. Some whiskey burn is also present on the back end. Weird vinegar/acidic finish
Mouthfeel is syrupy, not as viscous as maple syrup, more like cough syrup. Carbonation levels were par for style and age. Wish head was present to add some layers to beer.
Overall good beer but at 25 bucks a pop, not worth the price. There were some off flavors that detracted from the beer reaching elite status. Glad to have tried it and always intrigued to get my hands on anything Great Divide releases.
