Barrel Aged Yeti Imperial Stout has been aged for 20 months in used barrels from Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey, Colorado’s only whiskey maker. The rich and robustly roasted beer of 12.2% ABV and 75 International Bittering Units (IBUs) picks up flavors of oak, vanilla and whiskey through the extended aging process. These flavors add greater complexity to the already rich beer, while tempering its assertive nature.

“Our intent,” says Great Divide founder Brian Dunn, “was to age each beer in the barrels for 9 months. But we got busy with other projects, primarily the addition of a new bottling line, and the beers ended up aging for more than a year and half.” While the labels on the bottles state that the beers were aged 9 months in barrels, both beers were in fact aged 20 months in barrels.

Release limited to 470 bottles.

On tap at the Great Divide Barrel Bar, side by side with Regular, Oak-Aged and Oatmeal versions of Yeti. Black appearance with a small, mostly dissipating brown head. Aroma of bourbon spice, vanilla, oak, chocolate, caramel and a hint of dark fruits. Similar flavor. Full body with soft carbonation and a smooth, creamy feel. Pretty nice, but not one of my favorite versions of Yeti.

Taster at the barrel bar - black pour - nose of treacle, tamarind, fig, brown sugar, light bourbon - flavor is similar - slight umami character up front before getting sweet, with notes of tamarind, treacle, cookie dough, vanilla - touches of smoke - considering how long it was in the barrels, it is surprisingly smooth and low in the booziness - slick texture and a slightly spicy finish - in reality, not any better than regular Yeti, for a much higher price, but glad to have tried it.

Tap at Great Divide Barrel Room. Pours black, nice brown head that fades to a ring. Aroma is whiskey, vanilla, oak, cocoa, lightly sweet. Taste is light whiskey, vanilla, faint oak, chocolate and toast. Very balanced whiskey in this. Not over the top, alcohol is balanced well. Full bodied, medium carbonation. Faint alcohol burn on the palate. Awesome!

Rich with its dark chocolate and mocha bean flavors, showing toasty oak and whiskey nuances that lingers with a moderate hop bite. Soft and creamy all the way through, heat covered well.
