COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Barrel Aged Yeti Imperial Stout has been aged for 20 months in used barrels from Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey, Colorado’s only whiskey maker. The rich and robustly roasted beer of 12.2% ABV and 75 International Bittering Units (IBUs) picks up flavors of oak, vanilla and whiskey through the extended aging process. These flavors add greater complexity to the already rich beer, while tempering its assertive nature.

“Our intent,” says Great Divide founder Brian Dunn, “was to age each beer in the barrels for 9 months. But we got busy with other projects, primarily the addition of a new bottling line, and the beers ended up aging for more than a year and half.” While the labels on the bottles state that the beers were aged 9 months in barrels, both beers were in fact aged 20 months in barrels.

Release limited to 470 bottles.

750 ml bottle poured a translucent dark brown nearly black with a small lingering ring of brown foam. Aromas of cocoa, vanilla, carmellight wood and a hint of whiskey. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of vanilla, milk chocolate, roasted malt and light whiskey with a smooth malty finish.

Bottle. Pours opaque with a small, frothy, dark brown head, somewhat lasting with spare lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (molasses, chocolate, burnt), average hops (flowers, perfume), average yeast (leather) with notes of alcohol, prunes, wood, licorice, and vanilla. Full bodied, slick texture, soft carbonation, and a bitter finish. Long duration, moderate sweetness and acidity, heavy bitterness.

Bottle number 444/470 thanks to Lumpy...Big thanks to Lumpy. Pours black with no head, but the body coats the glass when swirled. Aroma of bourbon, nutty fudge, oak, ash, chocolate and some light coffee. Taste is chocolaty and nutty with fudge and a bitter oak finish that seems to last for ever. Ashy with caramel and vanilla noted on the next sip. Velvety and mouth coating with a few bubbles here and there. Amazing mouthfeel. Slight burn on the throat, but no alcohol (fusel) in the flavor. Great beer!

another top want knocked right off my list. kan thanks so much for sharing. You were truly generous. The bourbon kicked ass!! The other versions of Yeti should be OHHH so jealous. The roast, chocolate and boozy notes married so well in this beer. Gotta love the bourbon in this one. Thanks Kan.

Bottle shared by fonefan on 8/28/09 (#462/470): Pours an oily opaque with a small creamy, spotty lacing tan head. Aroma of rich dark caramely sweet maltiness with good vanilla whiskey complexity and notes of dark chocolate. Starts with good fullness and rich dark caramely malty sweetness and oaky whiskey balance with good dark chocolate espresso complexity. Very enjoyable and well-balanced.

Bottle @ Aarhus tasting. Black with a lasting dark brown head. Aroma is sweet, roasted malt, chocolate, wood and notes of red wine - probably from the wood. Flavor is very sweet, very bitter and light acidic. Dry and rather bitter finish with warming alcohol and a small acidity. Oily and smooth. The acidity seems to come more from the barrel than from an infection. 220113

3fourths (6965) - Helsinki, FINLAND - OCT 11, 2008
UPDATED: MAR 31, 2009 Deep black pour, thin dark brown head, large cola-like bubbles. Nose is roast, charred wood and worcestershire sauce, with some small notes of vanilla and soy. Thick and smooth body, a little brash and detached vanilla/bourbon/oak up front... lack of carbonation along with a medium body comes across as somewhat thin and pasty. Not as full and frothy as the BA Ruffian. Cold coffee and charred roast throughout, with some sweetness across the middle and warming alcohol in the finish. Wet, soggy charred bread, mmm. Hopefully it carbonates more and develops a little more complexity over time.

A: Pours a dense black color with a nice finger or two of dark brown foam. S: Big time dark chocolate aroma to this with lots of intense roasted malt and coffee aromas. There’s a big oak aroma with a hint of vanilla. A touch of bourbon but plenty of charred oak. T: Burnt and charred malt come through right at the beginning. Very heavy on the roast with lots of dark chocolate and coffee as well. Vanilla and a slightly spicy wood flavor. Sort of light on the actual bourbon, though. M: Quite full in body with a medium, smooth carbonation. O: A big, bold, intense beer. I was rather surprised to see this on-tap, but certainly won’t complain.

Many, many thanks to Kan for sharing this! Poured deep black with a well-retained cap of dark tan head. The aroma picked up coffee and dark chocolate with building bourbonny notes.. vanilla and a lighter array of chocolates trailed.. nice balance. Bourbon really took charge in the flavor and carried through the long finish.. well-roasted coffee and dark chocolates set up the middle and were accented by vanilla sweetness and toasty oak.. beautiful faint hit of smoke as it rolled off the palate. Heavily-bodied with low carbonation on the palate.. lots of barrel impression.. hot, but most certainly tasty!
