COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Barrel Aged Yeti Imperial Stout has been aged for 20 months in used barrels from Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey, Colorado’s only whiskey maker. The rich and robustly roasted beer of 12.2% ABV and 75 International Bittering Units (IBUs) picks up flavors of oak, vanilla and whiskey through the extended aging process. These flavors add greater complexity to the already rich beer, while tempering its assertive nature.

“Our intent,” says Great Divide founder Brian Dunn, “was to age each beer in the barrels for 9 months. But we got busy with other projects, primarily the addition of a new bottling line, and the beers ended up aging for more than a year and half.” While the labels on the bottles state that the beers were aged 9 months in barrels, both beers were in fact aged 20 months in barrels.

Release limited to 470 bottles.

Ba yeti ’15 - Huge thanks to Emil for this! Pours a night black color, with a small, dark brown, creamy head. Smells of melted milk chocolate, bakers chocolate, cocoa nibs, toffee and licorice. Very chocolate forward, while not getting very sweet on the nose, due to pleasantly toasty malts and spicy, oaken, yet flowery, warming Bourbon. Tastes of oaken Bourbon accompanied by milk chocolate in all its decadent facetts, with layers of earth, bakers chocolate, rock sugar, whipped cream and a spicy whiff of cinnamon. Mousee au chocolat gets enriched by oak chips and a well accentuated earthiness, relying on the omnipresent, smooth whipped cream. A flowery quality blends into soft, melted caramel, wood bark and licorice, tied together by a warming, dry zing from the bourbon, complimenting to the chocolate. Perfectly integrated Bourbon addition, which shines among a luscious milk chocolate sweetness by adding a nice, mellow yet spicy oakiness.

On tap @ Brouwer’s for Back in Black. Listed here at the standard Yeti 9.5%. Pours thick viscous blackish dark brown with thin oily dark mocha head. Aroma is heavily roasty dark chocolate malt, rich coffee, big dry barrel flavors, light bourbon and vanilla char on the back. Taste is huge rich dark chocolate malt, molten milk chocolate, oak. Thick, rich mouthfeel. Huge fudgy chocolate flavor lingers on the finish. Among the best Yetis, and that puts this in an elite category.

Pours a thick very dark brown with a remarkably tall reddish-brown head. I usually pour impy stouts this aggressively and rarely get this great of a head. It finally settles to a one-finger, ice cream float-like, caramel head. Chocolate, plastic, dark roasted malt nose. Sweet immediately, but gets progressively dry and bitter. Chocolate, smoky, dark roasted malt. Charred oak, but no oaky vanilla that I can pick up.

Completely black with a very dark brown/reddish used motor oil type of head. Smells of bourbon, alcohol, figs, plums, nuts, and malt. Taste starts with bourbon and chocolate, a bit of vanilla, light dark fruits, with a warm finish. Mouthfeel is thick and oily, low on the carbonation. Overall I really like this one. Not a huge fan of Great Divide but lover their yeti series.

Shared 750 ml., 2015 bottle, poured to my snifter displaying a black/brown hue, with light, ruby highlighting to the edges, quickly diminishing, brownish tan head foam, and a combination of foamy spots and leggy dots of lacing. The nose was roasted, sweet, treacle, dark fruit, and cocoa. Full bodied, and a bit syrupy, with similar notes, unusually good carbonation for the style, and medium, earthy & roasty bitterness. Not a lot of noticeable barrel influence, maybe a bit of tannic tartness, but nice warmth.

Taste is roasted malt, vanilla, dark chocolate, burnt caramel, soft booze and coffee notes. Body is medium-full with a dense bubbly carbonation. Sticky bodied with mild alcoholic warmth. Finishes with more roasted malt, chocolate, candy bars, molasses, burnt caramel and vanilla.

2015 bottled on Oct 16th. Poured an opaque pitch black with an average at best sized medium mocha sized head. Aroma of sweeter chocolate, vanilla bourbon, honey whiskey barrrels, vanilla extract. Flavor is sweet for a big Impy. Notes of chocolate pudding skins, vanilla extract, honey vanilla whiskey barrels, alcohol, char, tobacco and burnt whiskey barrels. Medium-low body, strong carbonation, chewy body, lingering carbonation. Good stuff.

UPDATED: MAR 3, 2016 Bottle [2011] @ home. Opaque black color, medium to full sized brown head that lasts for quite some time. Aroma is malts, wood, oak, but also a bit old imo. Taste malts, oak, sourish, no whiskey present as far as I can taste. Solely malts, oak and a sourness I dislike. A bitterness to some degree I guess but in any case this is very disappointing. Must be a bad bottle I think, but it’s all I can go on so no, not a good experience unfortunately.

2015 bottle. Dark, thick pour with slight bit of dark khaki head. Smells of huge woody tones, vanilla, bourbon, some chocolate. Taste is more oak, boozy, vanilla, some what sweet chocolate. The barrel character is a bit much, very overpowering. The woodiness sticks through to the finish. Not bad overall but you have to like barrel aging a lot. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
