3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle: Thanks, Justen! Deep brown, highly opaque center with lighter edges; off-white, slightly beige head settles quick to a thin, swampy layer atop the beer. Aroma is muted, notes of polished mahogany, sweet & toasted malt, roasted cocoa powder undertones, & a touch of faint smoke. Taste has a mostly toasted malt backbone with big notes of wood, nuts, & a little musk with some mid-palate caramel, toffee, & faint buttery sweetness. Hops makes a larger appearance; weedy, earthy, musky, & a little ashy. Finish contains some timid charcoal & moderate smoke, edging towards peat-like. Warmth brings out some prunes, raisins, & apple skins. Overall, a nice combo of yeast, smoke, spice, malt, & hops when all is said & done.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Great color - deep mahogany - but almost no head. Aroma is roast malt and a hint of peat smoke, though not as much as some other of the style. Flavor is straight delicious. Throughout the sip a steady stream of sweet bready malt coats the tongue without being cloying. While not high-abv there is just no awareness of any alcohol. I could drink way too many of these. Finish is balanced and clean. So good.

Named for a medieval Scottish sword, Claymore Scotch ale is a tribute to the legendary "Wee Heavy" beers of Scotland. A malty, deep-ruby-hued ale, it features a generous amount of caramel sweetness, a reserved hop profile and a subtle warming character, at 7.7% alcohol by volume. Claymore will be available in six-packs and on draft through mid-April.

(Bottle, 0.355 l, at Bar Molotow, 20160919) The beer poured deep mahogany coloured and clear. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had malts, caramel and molasses. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were malts, molasses, grass, sweetness, sugary sweetness and bitterness. Aftertaste was malty, sweet and bitter. A good brew spoilt by the excessive sweetness.

Tap at Great Divide. Orange-brown with lace. Full, sweet malt flavor, a bit of smoke of peat, a touch of soy. Caramel and chocolate of course. Decent, though not one of the best in this style.

4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle 330ml (2014) – cellared for 2 years. Served at room temperature. Pours a very dark brown (almost black) with a ruby tint. Head is small, lightly tanned, and mostly lasting. Aroma is rich and malty with notes of earthy hops (light); smokey toast, caramelized dates, sultana’s, figs, chocolate fudge, burnt brown sugar and a dash of vanilla essence. Flavour is smooth with a very light earthy bitterness, toasted malts, roasted barley, burnt caramel, muscatels, dark rum and raisin chocolate, treacle (light), aniseed (light) and some smokey/peated notes in the finish. Medium to full bodied with soft carbonation, a silky texture and a superb finish. A truly superb Scotch ale in every sense!

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Smooth and malty, caramel, earthy, light peat. Little to no hop character. Warming and not too sweet. I’m a big fan of Scotch & Old Ale and this ticks all the boxes. Lovely.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
A very tasty scotch ale. Pours a beautiful deep red with a white head. Not much smell, a bit of malt, sea salt, caramel and cucumber. Taste has fruitiness and sea salt, caramel right up front, with a nice salty follow-through, and cucumber in the finish. Had in the bottle.
