Named for a medieval Scottish sword, Claymore Scotch ale is a tribute to the legendary "Wee Heavy" beers of Scotland. A malty, deep-ruby-hued ale, it features a generous amount of caramel sweetness, a reserved hop profile and a subtle warming character, at 7.7% alcohol by volume. Claymore will be available in six-packs and on draft through mid-April.

Bottle: Thanks, Justen! Deep brown, highly opaque center with lighter edges; off-white, slightly beige head settles quick to a thin, swampy layer atop the beer. Aroma is muted, notes of polished mahogany, sweet & toasted malt, roasted cocoa powder undertones, & a touch of faint smoke. Taste has a mostly toasted malt backbone with big notes of wood, nuts, & a little musk with some mid-palate caramel, toffee, & faint buttery sweetness. Hops makes a larger appearance; weedy, earthy, musky, & a little ashy. Finish contains some timid charcoal & moderate smoke, edging towards peat-like. Warmth brings out some prunes, raisins, & apple skins. Overall, a nice combo of yeast, smoke, spice, malt, & hops when all is said & done.

Pours a dark brown or black color. Head just barely forms well after the pour. Head was beige. Some lacing left as you drink. Looks like a stout.

Aroma is pretty dark roasted malt. Dates, figs, maybe plum. A little coffee and caramel. No alcohol aroma.

Taste follows the nose. It’s very smooth. There’s a lot of malt, and as lot of sweetness. It is a little watery, but the taste is delicious.

Mouthfeel is smooth and super drinkable. Medium mouthfeel. It’s pretty carbonated.

Overall, this is super good. Totally worth trying. It is delicious.

Doesn’t seem to have a lot going for it. Not super malty, not super smokey, not too sweet or bitter... I mean you could say it is super balanced and easy to drink for 7.7%. Does get a nice tartness as it warms and you can get a touch of malt.

Nice deep color with ruby around the edges. Foam is quick to fade but leaves a nice residue. Not too strong peat and malt aroma. The taste is again peat and malt but but overpowering. Could be a bit more "peaty" for my tastes. Finished clean and smooth. Nice brew.

Smoke aroma with plum and raisins and dark chocolate. Taste is burnt caramel, char, plum/raisin, dark chocolate initially. In the middle of the mouth to the finish scotch flavor ramps up. A nice warming sensation travels from the chest up to the back of your tongue.

Date: June 21, 2015...Occasion: Father’s Day at The Draught House...Vessel: Dogfish Head oversized pint...Appearance: dark mahogany body, dense and imposing as a claymore might be in battle! Head retention seems absent, but the beer was poured by another on draft, so tough to comment on this...Aroma: subtle berry, darkened nuts, and then a malty roundhouse to the nose... Palate: Forceful, round and balanced, with a strong, lasting finish...Taste: plays like a porter, with soda and treacle pairing with a burning malt to produce a clean yet textured experience; nutty and dry at the finish...Overall: enough hops to build at the teeth, smooth and powerful for a 7.7% ABV...a very drinkable Scottish ale, with enough malt to spare...

Bottle in Baltimore. Clear dark brown pour, thin off-white head. Aroma is full of caramel, ripe fruits, some bready yeast, nuts and a hint of spices. Flavor is quite sweet, somewhat bitter, smooth and with a huge body. Decent brew.

Bottle@The Butcher’s Block, Sarasota, FL. My very first Scotch Ale and all i can say is, WOW! That was a great brew. Smooth, sweet, and delicious. Hard to describe the flavor but it seems there’s very little to no hops. Leaves a nice after-taste on the palate. Not as complex as a Doppelbock or Porter, but still a nice brew overall. So easily drinkable. Highly recommended.

On tap at Great Divide. Pours a dark brown colour with a creamy off white head. Aroma is heavy in caramel malt with some toast and cereal notes as well. Taste is moderately sweet throughout with a slight bitterness in the finish. Medium body, good carbonation, and smooth on the palate. Overall a pretty good scotch ale.
