3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
May 31st, 2011 - When Spring turns into Summer and the sun gets to be a little heavier in the sky, the fun and heady wheat beers of a month ago lose some of their potency. Something drier, with a heavier grain profile becomes a more suitable beer for cutting the sweat and anguish of an oppressive day. The Colette is a perfect fit for these transitional days, beautiful and burning bright with a dandelion yellow hue and a finger of soft, white foam. Banana and clove and a little corn tortilla rise from the surface, giving off light but coating smells. Fresh and full of grains, Great Divide did an excellent job of capturing the smell of the fields and putting that romantic image into a bottle. Full bodied and busy with a sharp and serrated aftertaste, the Colette can cut through dry mouth or thirst, with ample uplifting alcoholic corn and tortilla and flowery dandelion tastes, like bitter mizuna greens, a subtle vegetable bitterness and again, flowing dry graininess.

Bottle at home. Pours pale gold with thin head. Slightly cloudy. Mild and clean aroma of malt, wild yeast, green apple. Opens light with some sweet, fruity notes, developing into a bit of yeasty funkiness toward the middle. Tart, crisp finish. Though rather light in character, it has a surprisingly heavy mouthfeel. Not heavy overall, just more than expected. Very clean, pleasant, refreshing beer.

2.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
This beer pours a hazy whitish-yellow color with a small white bubbly head that dissipated very quickly even with an aggressive pour. The aroma biscuit and pineapple. The beer has a rather tropical aroma to it. The pineapple is picked up in the flavor yet stronger in the aroma. The taste also has some bready yeast flavor to it and some very slight spices to it but not much. Worth a try!

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
A- Lemons, wheat, slight funk, subtle spice.
A- Yellow color, hazy liquid, white head.
T- Wheat, lemons, funk, subtle spice.
P- Light body, average texture, average carbonation, slightly funky finish.
O Seemed more along the lines of a wheat ale than a farmhouse. Not much spice and just a little funk that sets it apart from anything different. Just needed a lot more depth to this one. Refreshing though.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
On tap at TCB in Iowa City, served in a pint glass.
A: A cloudy, hazy gold beer, which had no head to speak of when it arrived. Lacing was minimal as well.
S: Smelled as a wheat beer using Belgian yeast might, along with a metallic sour note.
T: The taste followed the smell rather closely: a solid wheat beer laden with Belgian-esque yeast and a citric-metallic sourness. The taste opened with lemon and wheat, with the sour flavors developing through the middle and lingering on the finish.
M: Verging on medium-bodied, with lovely carbonation.
O: Not a bad saison. Would drink again.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
Hazy pale gold pour with a 1 finger, soapy to creamy off white head. Aroma is big cereal and bready yeast right away, some stone fruit, dishwater wheaty notes, and some floral, perfumey hops. Flavor is big on doughy bready yeast, some cereal, dishwater wheat, oily grain, floury wheat, honey, a little booziness and floral hops. Medium body, oily feel, light, sharp carbonation. Pretty average Saison that’s way too strong, kinda messy and boozy, but still decent.
