Chipper (179), Red Lion, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 28, 2008 Amber color with a huge off white head. Very bitter aroma of mainly hops and citrus. Big hop bite and very smooth. Not much alcohol burn for the relatively high ABV.
Excellent brew. BillKismet (1897), Seattle, Washington, USA Sep 26, 2008 Bronze with nice, modest creamy lather of head. Arom of PNW hops and piquant, prickly pine and citrus. Burst of citrus again rounded out by pine and wonderful hops. This is truly a top contender in the IPA/American Strong Ale class. So much flavor packed into this, with the alcohol superbly masked. I will have to revisit this one--might deserve a higher rating. WesKBob (317), Bethany, Oklahoma, USA Sep 24, 2008 Pours a beautiful copper amber color with a thick white head with good retention and lacing. Lots of floaties. Aroma is strong with piney hops and a hint of citrus. Wonderful hop bite from start to finish with just a hint of sweet maltiness. Yes, it’s very hoppy but it’s not bitter for the sake of being bitter--it’s actually very flavorful and a surprisingly easy drinking beer. Very smooth and really masks the 9.1 ABV well. This is not just a great IPA, it’s a great beer all the way around. jhagmar (114), Gothenburg, Sweden Sep 21, 2008 Bottle, 355 ml, thanks ekstedt. Amber with medium, off-white head. Complex aroma of hops, mint, pine, herbs, grapefruit zest, pineapple and floral notes. Sllighlty malty at first taste, then intensely bitter, giving way to a slight sweetness before ending in a very long bitter aftertaste. Sparkling carbonation. Very dry mouthfeel. Medium to full bodied. Butters (1622), Virginia, USA Sep 20, 2008 2003 bottle. Extremely hoppy barlywine. I liked it, no one else did. I’ll rerate a fresh bottle. killjoy966 (215), Washington, USA Sep 20, 2008 Wow. Smells and tastes strongly of alcohol. Also tastes of earthy spices, possibly pine-like. Fairly blunt on the palate, but I suppose that’s the norm for the style. I’m not sure why anyone would want to drink 22 ounces of the stuff in one sitting, but it certainly makes for an interesting beer. Gary (352), Buckinghamshire, England Sep 20, 2008 .Fresh to the UK : Its uncompromisingly hoppy. No shit. ;).Like drinking a liquid air freshner. Shitloads of chewey pine needles going the conga with resin and care free alcoholic caramell. hughie (3016), Bedford, Bedfordshire, England Sep 20, 2008 Bright orange amber colour with a white head. Aroma, probably its best feature, began with a herby whiff of minty hop before caramel malts developed. The taste had a fruity melon sweetness in the background. Malts struggled to emerge from the overwhelming hoppiness, To be honest it was all a bit over the top for me.
