COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Hoppier, maltier and with more alcohol than a standard IPA, Hercules Double IPA definitely is not for the faint of heart. Hercules Double IPA is, however, an elixir fit for the gods. A brash but creamy wonder, Hercules pours a deep orange-coppery color, forming substantial lace in the glass. Hercules Double IPA delivers a huge amount of piney, floral, and citrusy hop aroma and flavor from start to finish. A hefty backbone of nutty, toffee-like malt character balances Hercules’ aggressive, punchy hop profile. 85 International Bittering Units (IBUs).

UPDATED: OCT 23, 2014 Poured from the bottle into the pint glass, looks a majestic glowing orange. The strength of this beer lies in it’s ability to taste like an IPA but pack the punch of a double or triple. I can’t believe they made a 10% that can be finished in 4-5 drinks per glass. Wonderful.

Big, malty and bitter. Kinda chunky. Missing the punchy hop aroma I was looking for in a DIPA. Really more of a barley-wine to me. I’ll age a bottle for some more oldish flavors. Hop flavor/bitter profile is quite complex. Delish! Sip, sip sip, can’t stop.

"good body, great mouthfeel. super hoppy, but maybe one of the hops used isn’t quite to my liking...but the others are. i still like and recommend the beer, i just prefer a few others to this one. 8/09-still not my favorite double (see Ruination and Hop 15) but me thinks the first one i had was past it’s prime. this time it was fresher, and while not huge in aroma, or even flavor for a 2ipa, it’s perfectly balanced and quite tasty. Transfer from BA review on 4-30-14- Served on tap in a pint glass Appearance – The beer is served a deep amber color with a one finger head of off-white foam. The head has a great level of retention, very slowly fading to leave nice rings of foamy lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma of the beer is relatively light for a big robust 10 % abv. IPA, consisting mostly entirely of a resinous smell. Pine hops are the biggest, but are accompanied by other hop aromas of an earthy and grassy aroma as well. Rounding out these smells are some lighter smells of a caramel and bready nature. Taste – The taste begins with a huge amount of maltiness which only seems to intensity as the taste moves on. The malty flavors are a mix of a bready and doughy taste with some rather sweet tastes of a toffee and caramel nature present right from the start as well. With these initial tastes there is also some fruity flavors and a moderate amount of a grapefruit hop flavor. The fruit and grapefruit remain rather light throughout the taste, adding just a backdrop flavor. While the grapefruit hop remains light, the overall hoppiness does not, with more hop flavors of a pine and earthy nature coming to the tongue. Both really intensify as the favor profile advances forward, with the pine really taking the lead. Some of the sweetness actually increases more toward the end with the toffee becoming more pronounced as well, nicely balancing the resinous and dank hop tastes as they grow in strength. In the end, with a tiny bit of a boozy hit and with all the changes that occur throughout the taste, one if left with a very malty and dankly and resinously hopped taste to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is quite thick and chewy with a carbonation level that is on the average side. The thick and chewy body are perfect for all the malty and hoppy flavors of the brew really accentuating them and making for a very slow drinker indeed. Overall – Big and robust in the malt department with lots of dank and resinous hop. A very nice but slow sipping imperial IPA. Very tasty.

330ml bottle poured in a Leffe chalice. A: Pours a deep orange to amber clear color. Forms a big aired white to yellow head when poured. Good retention. It never disappears completely, leaving a small bubbled layer and nice lacings around S: Smells like a well done double American IPA should smell :). Very aggressive on citrus-flowery-pine hops. A bit metallic. Caramel malts and yeasts T: Tastes like a well done double American IPA should taste :). Light sweet upfront, followed by the caramel and caramel malts. Hops are citrus, grassy. Notes of pineapple. End is deliciously bitter respecting the 85 IBUs M: Medium creamy molasses body with nice carbonation. Very nice hoppy aftertaste. The 10% ABV is not felt O: Absolutely drinkable beer. Not aggressive nor extreme. A delicious US Double IPA specimen [ BA Review @ 2/26/2012 ]
