Hoppier, maltier and with more alcohol than a standard IPA, Hercules Double IPA definitely is not for the faint of heart. Hercules Double IPA is, however, an elixir fit for the gods. A brash but creamy wonder, Hercules pours a deep orange-coppery color, forming substantial lace in the glass. Hercules Double IPA delivers a huge amount of piney, floral, and citrusy hop aroma and flavor from start to finish. A hefty backbone of nutty, toffee-like malt character balances Hercules’ aggressive, punchy hop profile. 85 International Bittering Units (IBUs).

KajII (800) - Macon, North Carolina, USA - MAY 20, 2012
UPDATED: MAY 30, 2012 Bottle. The pour was a murky medium copper orange with a large (2-3 finger) rocky cream colored head that had decent retention, finally reducing to a thin layer of residue with some excellent sheeting of sticky lacing. The aroma was of a toasted grain malt, pine and floral hops and a mildly sweet yeast with notes of citrus (grapefruit / peel), toffee, caramel and a mild alcohol tinge. The taste was bitter sweet and a tad malty with a hint of toffee early on, with the taste becoming a bit hoppier and having a strong grapefruit presence and a mild citrus peel bitterness towards the end. The flavor lingered for a good while with the taste of citrus and hops settling nicely on the taste buds, meanwhile a mild alcohol warming sensation just added to the enjoyment of this tantalizing brew. Mouthfeel was almost medium in body with a dry oily texture and a good lively carbonation. Overall a DIPA with a well balanced blending of flavors that created a smooth sweet bitter taste, which made this a very enjoyable and drinkable brew.

Hefty DIPA with different hop varieties, though the bottle does not state which ones, and nor does Great Divide’s website. Bottle of about half a year of age so should still carry a lot of hop aromas. Elaborately lacing, medium thick, off-white, moussy head retaining well seen the ABV, over a deep, ’autumny’, orangey amber coloured beer with a light haze of almost invisible yeast bits through which fairly vivid sparkling pierces from the bottom upwards. Both perfumey and pungent bouquet of a ton of bitter grapefruit flesh and grapefruit peel, pine needles, cigarette tobacco, curry spices, dried ginger, salted tomato, toasted white bread, roasted pine nuts, lychee, tangerine, bitter honey, biscuit, hemp, mouldy lemon, gin, egg yolk, marmelade. Clean fruity onset with hints of mango, lychee and orange, sweetish and smooth with some very light umami touches here and there (cooked chicken) as well as a modest onset of edgy hop bitterishness already appearing; carbo remains soft, mouthfeel is supple, smooth, resinous and oily. A solid backbone of caramelly sweet and nutty malts support the hops growing in intensity from beginning to end, leading to a thoroughly bittering, spicy, chicory-, wormwood- or even tonic water-like finish with lingering salty edges, drying the back of the mouth completely so that no malt sweetness can pass through anymore. Retronasally, all these vivid pine, grapefruit, tangerine and dried spice fragrances return in full glory. Alcohol, though noticeable as a subtle warming effect after swallowing, remains well hidden for a 10% ABV beer. Not the single most overwhelming double IPA I had so far (that must have been Heady Topper), but still an extremely solid example of its style, with the flavour clearly tilted towards the hop bitterness (I guess I like my DIPAs with some more malt sweetness); in short, one for die hard hopheads, as it does not compromise on its hoppiness at all, like the label and website announce. Pine fragrance is very strong in this one as well as grapefruit (in both pink and yellow variations), it is clearly the hops which get all the credits here - surely I will have their resinous, spicy bitterness hanging around in my mouth for hours to come.

In the glass the beer has a reddish amber color with a big head. The aroma has pine, citrus and some hops. The taste doesn’t have the big bitter bite but a good balance of resin, hops and some caramel malts. Mild carbonation with a long finish.

Haven’t had this beer in a while fresh but I’m guessing this one was. On tap at hienens. Pours light orange with thin, tight head. Aromas of tropical fruit and piney hops. Flavor is citrus with a bitter punch and then the alcohol kicks your buds. Finish is bitter and lasting, alcohol is definitely a big factor in the quaf ability. Descent version of a classic IIPA.

33cl bottle. Dark brown-ruby pour with a thin, smooth tan head. Smells dank, with notes of citrus, pine and caramel. Bitter-sweet taste, well balanced except maybe for the alcohol that comes a little too powerful.

355ml bottle from alko. Pours orange with with slightly tanned diminishing head. Aroma is fruity, citrus, little bit of caramel. Taste is light sweetness, very bitter. Nice finish to be savoured. You can sense the alcohol content on palate, texture is really thick. Good.

Pours orange with beautiful, cream head, leaving a nice lacing on glass. Aroma: pine tree, herbs, citrus fruit, but also biscuit with a touch of caramel. Taste: nice pine tree with herbs coupled with citrus, followed bz a malty (but not heavy) backbone. The palate is increadibly long. The 10% ABV is not noticable at all. In fact this DIPA appears incredibly light (and thus dangerous), but has a long of complexity to offer. Simply fantastic.

bottle at home. pours dark copperish gold with a steady thin head. Immense exotic nose; pineapple, mango, tangerine peel. Overwhelmingly pine hoppy body (not too found of), pine bitters in the taste. Aftertaste of orange peel and bergamot.
